Rząd zapewni nowym związkom zawodowym pełną możliwość wypełniania podstawowych funkcji w zakresie obrony interesów pracowniczych, realizacji potrzeb materialnych, społecznych i kulturalnych pracowników.
Komitety Założycielskie funkcjonować będą do statutowego wyboru nowych władz.
Rząd zobowiązuje się do utworzeniu warunków dokonania rejestracji nowych związków zawodowych poza rejestrem CRZZ.
5. Nowe związki zawodowe winny mieć realną możliwość publicznego opiniowania kluczowych decyzji determinujących warunki życia ludzi pracy: zasad podziału dochodu narodowego na konsumpcję i akumulację, podziału funduszu konsumpcji społecznej na różne cele (zdrowie, oświatę, kulturę), podstawowych zasad wynagradzania i kierunków polityki płac, a szczególnie zasady automatycznej korektury płac w warunkach inflacji, wieloletnich planów gospodarczych, kierunków inwestycji oraz zmiany cen. Rząd zobowiązuje się zapewnić warunki do pełnienia tych funkcji.
Prawo do strajku będzie zagwarantowane w przygotowywanej ustawie o związkach zawodowych.
Do czasu zaś uchwalenia ustawy rząd gwarantuje strajkującym i osobom wspomagającym bezpieczeństwo osobiste i utrzymanie dotychczasowych warunków pracy.
3. Działalność radia i telewizji oraz prasy i wydawnictw powinna służyć wyrażaniu różnorodności myśli, poglądów i sądów. Powinna ona podlegać społecznej kontroli.
4. Prasa, podobnie jak obywatele i ich organizacje, powinna korzystać z dostępu do dokumentów (aktów) publicznych, zwłaszcza administracyjnych, planów społeczno-gospodarczych itp., wydawanych przez rząd i podległe mu organy administracyjne. Wyjątki od zasady jawności działania administracji określone zostaną w ustawie zgodnie z pkt. 1.
a) Niezwłoczne zbadanie zasadności zwolnień z pracy po strajkach w 1970 i 1976 roku. We wszystkich zgłoszonych przypadkach i w razie stwierdzenia nieprawidłowości natychmiastowe przywrócenie do pracy, jeżeli zainteresowani będą sobie tego życzyć, z uwzględnieniem nabytych w międzyczasie kwalifikacji. Będzie to miało odpowiednie zastosowanie w sprawach skreślonych studentów;
b) przekazanie spraw osób wymienionych w punkcie b) do rozpatrzenia Ministrowi Sprawiedliwości, który w terminie dwóch tygodni nada stosowny bieg sprawie; w przypadkach, kiedy wymienione osoby są pozbawione wolności — przerwanie wykonywania kary do czasu zakończenia procesu; c) rozpatrzenie zasadności tymczasowego aresztu i uwolnienie osób wymienionych w aneksie;
d) pełne przestrzeganie swobody wyrażania przekonań w życiu publicznym i zawodowym.
Związki zawodowe powinny uczestniczyć szczególnie w pracach nad ustawami o socjalistycznych organizacjach gospodarczych i o samorządzie robotniczym.
MKS postuluje ponadto:
- stworzenie trwałych perspektyw dla rozwoju chłopskiego gospodarstwa rodzinnego — podstawy polskiego rolnictwa,
- zrównanie sektorów rolnictwa w dostępie do wszystkich środków produkcji, włącznie z ziemią,
Wprowadzane będą stopniowe podwyżki płac wszystkich grup pracowniczych, a przede wszystkim płac najniższych. W odniesieniu do pracowników umysłowych przedsiębiorstw - podniesienie uposażenia odpowiadającego wysokości jednej kategorii osobistego zaszeregowania. Zakończenie wprowadzania aktualnie omawianych podwyżek płac nastąpi do końca września br. zgodnie z porozumieniami branżowymi.
Przyjęto za konieczność zahamowanie wzrostu cen towarów powszechnego użytku poprzez wzmożoną kontrolę sektora uspołecznionego i prywatnego, w szczególności zaprzestania tzw. cichej podwyżki cen.
Ustalono, że zostanie dokonana poprawa zaopatrzenia ludności w mięso do 31. 12. 1980 roku w wyniku m. in. zwiększenia opłacalności produkcji rolnej, ograniczenie do niezbędnego minimum eksportu mięsa i dodatkowego importu mięsa.
O podjętych decyzjach i działaniach w przedmiocie zaopatrzenia rynku społeczeństwo zostanie poinformowane do końca roku.
Rząd przedstawi program realizacji w terminie do dnia 31. XII. 1980 roku. Rząd przygotuje propozycje aby najniższe renty i emerytury podwyższyć do tzw. minimum socjalnego, określonego na podstawie badań odpowiednich instytutów, udostępnionych opinii publicznej i poddanych kontroli związków zawodowych.
Nastąpi opracowanie i przedstawienie do 31 grudnia 1980 roku zasad i sposobu realizacji programów wprowadzania wolnych płatnych sobót lub innego sposobu regulacji skróconego czasu pracy.
[Załącznik do postulatu 21.:
  7. Wprowadzić w systemie zmianowym zwiększenie do 50% dodatku za prace w godzinach nocnych w systemie dniówkowym i 30% rzeczywistego zarobku w systemie akordowym.

Ze strony Międzyzakładowego Komitetu Strajkowego protokół podpisali: Lech Wałęsa (przewodniczący Prezydium MKS), Andrzej Kołodziej i Bogdan Lis (wiceprzewodniczący Prezydium MKS), a także Lech Bądkowski, Wojciech Gruszecki, Stefan Izdebski, Jerzy Kmiecik, Zdzisław Kobyliński, Henryka Krzywonos, Stefan Lewandowski, Alina Pieńkowska, Józef Przybylski, Jerzy Sikorski, Lech Sobieszek, Tadeusz Stanny, Anna Walentynowicz i Florian Wiśniewski.

2020.08.21 12:32 LostSoulsWanted Mussolini and the Mafia 2/4

New York Times Applauds Mussolini
From this time on, feature articles on this sensational program crowded into the press of the world, and no newspaper outside Italy exceeded The New York Times in breadth of coverage. A column and a half story on January 16, 1928, trumpeted, "Breaking the backbone of the Mafia is one of Premier Mussolini's great achievements."[14] A Times editorial the following day praised the police executive responsible for directing this drive, Prefect Cesare Mori of Palermo, a veteran of almost 40 years of service in the Italian police. Said the Times, "Prefect Mori of Palermo, who has broken the back of the Mafia in Sicily, will go down in history as a deliverer and superman."[15] The New York Times ultimately ran three commendatory profiles of Mori, probably the most admiring written by the paper's own correspondent, Arnaldo Cortesi, on March 4, 1928,[16] which also included a photograph of Mori and a picture of a group of alleged Mafia on trial, enclosed in a large cage. This tactic, employed a number of times during mass trials, was intended to protect the judge, witnesses and jury from personal attack from one or another of the defendants. Correspondent Cortesi concluded that police working under Prefect Mori had made arrests in 79 of 361 municipalities, totaling 1,086 men belonging to five gangs, and accused, among hundreds of serious crimes, of 357 murders alone. Between May 1926 and the end of March 1928 eleven policemen had been killed and another 350 wounded in what amounted to virtual battles with the Mafia. Some narratives concerned with the suppression of the Mafia tend to be exclusively concerned with Sicily, and dream up fanciful reasons for this campaign,[17] Actually, it was part of a three-pronged effort to subdue organized crime as well on the island of Sardinia, and in Calabria, the three provinces in the "toe" of the Italian mainland "boot." A Times survey in early 1928 reported that Italian authorities considered the Sardinian crime rate to be double that of Sicily, with a murder rate of 24 per 100,000 population, as against Sicily's 16. As for Calabria, it was officially considered to have a crime rate higher than either Sicily or Sardinia, and observers were wondering when Mussolini would stretch the anti-crime drive there.[18]
Finding Refuge in America
Some social and political realities of the time during which this anti-Mafia onslaught took place have to be kept in mind, as well as some of the international implications. The swiftness and comprehensiveness of the drive headed by Prefect Mori caused grave disturbances among the Mafiosi, who responded not only in major gun battles with the police but also in flight to the Italian mainland and to the United States. Though the major Sicilian figures in the American branch of the Mafia had arrived well before 1926, as a result of Mussolini's drive the American gangs accumulated a considerable number of lesser hoodlums who found refuge in the United States from Italian police pursuit. The large number of Italians in the United States also made this country a convenient hiding place for this migrating criminal element. The adoption in 1919 of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution prohibiting alcoholic beverages had spawned a fantastic increase in opportunities to make a living by breaking the law.[19] Even though criminal gangs had been a part of urban America since the 1860s, the new opportunities presented by supplying the parched American appetite with illegal alcohol, and everything that went with it in the field of legally enjoined pleasures and diversions, gave organized crime a stimulus in the 1920s that could hardly have even been imagined earlier. With Americans spending $100,000,000 a year abroad on alcohol by 1925,[20] it can be understood that those who decided they should spend such money on hard liquor at home knew what they were doing in developing the massive smuggling system that evolved in the 1923-1933 decade. The Mafia was just one part of the entire "bootlegging" scene, competing with other ethnic gangs of Irish, Jewish and assorted lesser organizations of different ancestry,[21] let alone the immense domestic group of native birth engaged in home manufacture and distribution of high voltage drink.[22] In any case, the Mussolini effort to stamp out the Mafia contributed to the mobilization of Sicilian gangsters in the US. In a significant way these new arrivals also brought long-standing feuds and competition with them. Law enforcement authorities reported 527 gangster killings in the state of Illinois alone in 1928, part of this sharp rise traceable to the importation of ancient rivalries from Sicily.[23] Though the criminals fleeing from Sicily did not make recourse to the ploy of claiming to be "political" persecutees, a claim so dear to killers and armed robbery and mayhem artists in the United States 50 years later, they did not shrink from involvement in political affairs if there was gain to be made from it. A number of Mafia "refugees" were known even to return to Italy early in 1927 to build a system to smuggle "anti-fascists" to France.[24]
No Death Penalty for Mafia Crimes
It has been seen that many of the convictions of Mafia in Sicilian courts were for homicide, but that no death sentences were handed down. During the first few years of Fascist rule, Italy had no capital punishment for any offense. This changed in November 1926 following the third assassination attempt on Mussolini in that same year. The regime proposed its reestablishment on November 5, and the Italian Senate approved it 15 days later.[25] However, the death penalty was severely restricted to a very limited number of offenses: treason, espionage, armed rebellion, and attempts on the life of the head of state by an Italian native.[26] So no death penalty attached to Mafia criminals subsequently convicted of murder, and there were quite a few.
A remarkable decrease in crime in Italy and Sicily was reported by early 1929,[27] even as Prefect Mori's offensive bore on. As a consequence of an extended proceeding, 154 members of a Palermo gang were sent to prison on February 28, 1929.[28] Another major trial at Termini Imerese concluded after nine months, with a jury mulling over 7,000 questions. Part of the problem here was a consequence of the voluminous documentation supplied by the prosecution, which involved the vast captured correspondence of the Mafia chief in this case. This material not only demonstrated a serious involvement of Sicilian governmental authorities, but also revealed significant ties with Mafia in the United States. It ended on May 1, 1929, with a verdict of guilty for 150 of the 161 defendants.[29] In 1930 another major trial took place in Sicily at Sciacca, involving 241 alleged Mafia accused of several hundred crimes, including 43 homicides. The prosecution eventually produced a small mountain of documentary evidence, which filled 69 boxes. Beginning in July 1930,[30] the trial dragged on until June 22, 1931, when it concluded with the conviction of 124 Mafia (the number of the defendants had shrunk from 241 to 178), 15 of the convicted receiving life sentences, and the 109 others receiving a total of 1,200 years in prison. The jury was out four days, and considered a total of 3,000 questions.[31] This Sciacca trial was considered the most sensational of the entire series, with the defendants sitting in three iron-barred cages throughout the court proceedings. It is worth noting that in this case as well, the defendants were hardly poverty-stricken peasants, but were represented by a substantial contingent of what were reputed to be highly paid lawyers.[32]
More US Praise for Anti-Mafia Campaign
Readers in the United States were treated in December 1930 to an eyewitness report on an Italian Mafia trial written by a well-known American magazine publisher, S. S. McClure, who was present at the beginning of a new Palermo trial. In a report that appeared in the New York Times, he mentioned that Prefect Mori had received four gold medals for his work in prosecuting the Mafia since 1926, and that during one recent year there had been 1,750 murders in Palermo alone. The Mori campaign had thus far resulted in roughly 2,000 arrests, and about half as many convictions, with the result, McClure stated, that "Today, in Sicily and Naples, and in all the regions heretofore plagued by the racketeer, there is absolute freedom from any form of extortion."[33] By the end of 1931 Mussolini's drive to wipe out the Mafia was entering its final stages. Another big Palermo trial started on November 29 of that year, with the public prosecutor seeking jail sentences for between 165 and 200 of a somewhat larger group of defendants.[34] The trial lasted into Christmas week, and of an eventual 245 persons brought before the court, 141 were convicted on December 29, 1931.[35] Only one trial drew attention in 1932, but it was another on the scale previously conducted at Sciacca. This one began in the early spring, at Agrigento. It was held in an improvised courtroom in the former monastery of Santo Spirito, with the defendants once more confined in a large barred cage. It concluded on May 2, 1932, with the sentencing of another 244 Mafia members to a total of 1,200 years in prison.[36] Six weeks later a special piece in The New York Times praised Italy as a country among the world's leaders in instituting penal reforms.[37] Simultaneous with the campaign in Sicily, authorities were carrying out an anti-Mafia drive on the neighboring island of Sardinia as well as on the Italian mainland. On June 22, 1934, an electrifying raid took place on the mainland, largely in the towns of Cadeto, Gallino, Arno and Pellaro, all located on the "sole" of the Italian peninsular "boot." Some 400 Mafiosi were arrested in this swoop, the majority of whom, it turned out, had fled there from Sicily.[38] They had, as might be expected, returned to traditional "protection rackets," reported to be very heavy in Reggio Calabria as they had once been in Sicily. At the conclusion of their year-long trial, during which 1,000 witnesses appeared for the prosecution, an unspecified number of the defendants were given long prison terms. By mid-1935, it may be assumed, the Mafia had been reduced to a thin shadow of its former self. By this time, priorities in Italy had profoundly shifted as Mussolini had begun Italy's quest for big-power status and a prominent position in the Mediterranean, as well as a belated role as an African colonial power. As a result of the growing hostility toward Mussolini and the Italian Fascist state in the English-speaking world, commendation of anything in Italy was no longer fashionable, and most of what was reported in the United States about domestic affairs in Italy concerned matters discreditable to the regime.[39] The last mention in the New York Times of Italian prosecution of the Mafia prior to the outbreak of World War II was in November 1937. It reported on the arrest of 80 Mafiosi in Trapani and the contiguous areas of mountainous and relatively inaccessible western Sicily, who were subsequently arraigned in Messina.[40] Little background information was provided, other than a mention that the drive was a response to a "revival of Mafia activities." Nothing appeared subsequently in the Times on the outcome of this newest police move against the Sicilian Mafia.
Wartime Salvation for the Mafia
Since the central theme of this narrative concerns the Mafia in Sicily and Italy, with only incidental reference to various international relationships growing out of it, the history of the Mafia in America is not included here except where the interlocking consequences of their joint existence becomes obvious. Therefore the latter aspect has so far been treated only peripherally. This changed with the Second World War, which brought the two together to an even greater degree than during the 1920s and 1930s, at least in their connection to international politics. As a consequence of the war, the Mafia became something more than a domestic phenomenon in both Italy and the United States. In Italy, what looked like extinction was turned around by the fortunes of the war, which became the salvation of the Mafia as a force in Italian affairs.
How this came about requires a summary of Mafia experiences in the United States in the decade between 1933, when Prohibition ended, and the 1943 Anglo-American invasion of Sicily as a phase of World War II. The re-legalization in 1933 of the manufacture, distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages ended the phase of Mafia criminal opulence that resulted from violation of the previous legal prohibition of such enterprises. Undoubtedly things had begun to change in the relationships between the Mafia and the conventional world, and one of the major aspects of this was the steady penetration of legitimate business by Mafia money, influence and management, resulting in a degree of prosaic respectability which has grown steadily ever since.
Labor Union Corruption
Organized crime continued to make the bulk of its money from control of gambling, prostitution and the ever-expanding extortion or "protection" rackets, the latter much aided by the corruption of labor unions. None of this was affected adversely by the end of Prohibition. In fact, one of the new adjustments made by the Mafia was its substantial penetration of the new legitimate businesses supplying Americans with beer, wine and whiskey. Much of the latter two were imported, and the infiltration of the waterfront of the large port cities – originally a minor enterprise of organized crime – became a very large one. Port facilities, some longshoremen's unions, and all other functional aspects ultimately came under Mafia control. The preposterous incidents related to the extension of the war to Italy in the early 1940s came as a result of this situation. There were two phases in the process whereby the Mafia achieved respectability through "cooperation" with the military and naval intelligence branches of the US war machine after American involvement in the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor. One was recruitment by the famous wartime spy agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) – ancestor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) – and the alleged supply of information about Sicily deemed crucial to the invasion planners prior to this event in July 1943. The other concerned alleged Mafia cooperation with US naval intelligence in alerting them as to the existence of German and Italian spies on the New York waterfront, and in preventing such enemy espionage from penetrating the dock areas and destroying ships or facilities, or perpetrating related sabotage.

By móc metaforycznie oddychać.

2020.07.30 02:26 djax9 No one noticed Rotos is using his A2 on start Auto/Defense?

I’m noticing opposing Rotos (and my Rotos on auto) is consistently using his A2 on his first turn. Figured id see some rants here on this.. or is this just me?
If not... this is a HUGE ninja nerf. Not that he probably didn’t need it. But still pretty shady..
Cant say Im surprised to see Plarium take the time to do this but not fix several other AI ability order issues that have been present for the better part of a year or more.
(They also did something similar to Arbiter, that also seemed to go unnoticed, when Tormin got released. She all of a sudden started using her revive on second turn no matter what.. even when no one was dead. Effectively making Termini’s freeze even more effective. Also pretty shady if you ask me.)

2020.07.21 10:23 Human_in_hell The Alphabet Murders

The Alphabet Murders, also known as the Double Initial Murders, are an unsolved series of child murders which occurred between 1971 and 1973 in Rochester, New York. All three victims of the Alphabet Murders were girls aged ten or eleven whose surname began with the same letter as that of her first name. Each victim had been sexually assaulted and murdered either by manual or ligature strangulation before her body was discarded in or near a town or village also beginning with the same letter as her initials. The murders committed by this unidentified serial killer became known as the “Alphabet Murders” and the “Double Initial Murders” due to the fact that each of the victims first and last names began with the same letter.
Carmen Colon –
At 4:20 p.m. on November 16, 1971 a 10-year-old Puerto Rican child named Carmen Colón disappeared while returning home from an errand in Rochester, New York. According to eyewitnesses, Colón entered the pharmacy her grandmother had instructed her to visit on West Main Street, but left the store upon learning the prescription she had been instructed to collect had not been processed, informing the storeowner, Jack Corbin: "I got to go. I got to go." She was then observed entering a car parked close to the pharmacy. Colón was reported missing to the Rochester Police Department at 7:50 p.m.
Approximately fifty minutes after Colón exited the pharmacy, scores of motorists driving along Interstate 490 observed the child, naked from the waist down, running from a reversing vehicle believed to be a dark-colored Ford Pinto hatchback, frantically waving her arms and shouting in an attempt to flag down a passing vehicle. At least one of these witnesses observed Colón being submissively led back to this vehicle by her abductor.
Two days later, two teenage boys discovered Colón's partially nude body in a gully not far from Interstate 490, and close to the village of Churchville. This location was approximately 12 miles from where Colón had last been seen alive. Her coat was discovered in a culvert some three hundred feet from her body; her trousers were only discovered on November 30, close to the service road near where numerous motorists had observed her attempting to escape her abductor.
An autopsy revealed that, in addition to having been raped, the child had suffered a fracture to her skull and one of her vertebrae before she had been manually strangled to death. Furthermore, her body had been extensively scratched by fingernails.
Both the murder of Colón and the fact no individual who had observed the child attempting to flee from her abductor alongside Interstate 490 had attempted to offer her any assistance generated intense public outrage. Two New York newspapers, the Times Union and the Democrat and Chronicle, initially offered a combined reward of $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her murderer, and all information each publication received was relayed to police. Numerous local businesses and residents added private donations to the reward fund, gradually leading the sum to exceed $6,000. Although police interrogated several suspects in the months following Colón's murder, all were cleared of involvement, and by December 21, the number of investigators assigned to the case on a full-time basis was decreased to three.
In early 1972, five large billboards—each measuring 30-feet-by-12-feet—were erected alongside major Rochester expressways. Each bore an 8 feet (2.4 m) high picture of the child alongside the headline: Do You Know Who Killed Carmen Colón? Free use of these billboards was given for one month by the Rochester Outdoor Advertising Company. Each offered a $6,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Colón's murderer or murderers in addition to displaying the telephone hotline number and postal address—each established the previous November to encourage the public to submit anonymous information. Although this tactic generated several new leads, all failed to bear fruition.
Wanda Walkowicz –
Seventeen months later, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on April 2, 1973, 11-year-old Wanda Walkowicz disappeared from the east side of Rochester while returning home from an errand. According to the owner of the delicatessen Walkowicz had been instructed to visit, the child had purchased the groceries she had been instructed to buy at approximately 5:15 p.m. before she had begun walking alone down Conkey Avenue. Walkowicz was reported missing by her mother, Joyce, at 8:00 p.m.
Police immediately launched an intense search to locate Walkowicz. Almost fifty detectives searched several square miles of the terrain around her home, the delicatessen, and areas around the Genesee River she was known to play. These searches failed to locate the child, although several neighborhood residents recalled observing Walkowicz, struggling to carry the bag of groceries, walking just north of Avenue B. Three classmates specifically observed Walkowicz bracing the bag against a fence so that she could improve her grip upon the bag as a brown vehicle drove past her.
Walkowicz's fully clothed body was found by a police officer at 10:15 a.m. the following day, discarded at the base of a hillside alongside an access road to State Route 104 in Webster, approximately 7 miles from Rochester. The position of her body indicated she had likely been thrown from a moving vehicle, with her body rolling down the embankment.
An autopsy revealed she had been sexually assaulted, then strangled from behind with a ligature, most likely a belt. Several defensive wounds indicated Walkowicz had fought her murderer. In addition, her body had been redressed after death. The autopsy also revealed traces of semen and pubic hair upon the child's body. Furthermore, several strands of white cat fur were found upon her clothing, although the Walkowicz family did not own a pet with the fur of this color.
As had been the case with Carmen Colón, investigators established an anonymous telephone hotline in addition to distributing numerous flyers throughout Rochester appealing for information. A reward of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Walkowicz's murder was also established.
These police inquiries produced an eyewitness who informed investigators that as Walkowicz had walked home from the delicatessen on the evening of April 2, he had observed the child standing alongside the passenger door of a large brown vehicle, conversing with the driver. This eyewitness was unable to obtain a clear view of the occupant of the vehicle, although the location of this sighting was just two-tenths of a mile from the Walkowicz home. Another individual who contacted investigators following the installation of the anonymous hotline informed investigators she had observed a man forcing a red-haired girl matching Walkowicz's description into a light-colored Dodge Dart on Conkey Avenue between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the evening of her disappearance.
The Rochester Police Department dismissed any suggestion of a link between the murders of Colón and Walkowicz, although a sheriff's sergeant who had been assigned to investigate Colón's murder (by this stage still an open although largely inactive case) was reassigned to the task force implemented to investigate the murder of Walkowicz.
In September 1973, local television network WOKR announced plans to broadcast a televised reconstruction of Walkowicz's abduction and subsequent recovery of her body. This 30-minute episode was broadcast on 21 October, accompanied by public appeals for witnesses to contact authorities. Although this program resulted in the Rochester Police Department receiving over 200 calls from the public, no useful leads were gained.
Michelle Maenza -
Seven months later, on the evening of November 26, 1973, 11-year-old Michelle Maenza was reported missing by her mother, Carolyn, after she failed to return home from school. Subsequent investigations would determine Maenza was last seen by her classmates at approximately 3:20 p.m. walking alone en route to a shopping plaza located close to her school with the intention of retrieving a purse her mother had left inside a store within the plaza earlier that day. Approximately ten minutes later, a witness observed Maenza sitting in the passenger seat of a beige or tan vehicle traveling at high speed on Ackerman Street before turning onto Webster Avenue. According to this witness, the child had been weeping.
At 5:30 p.m on November 26, a motorist observed a man standing by a large beige or tan vehicle with a flat tire, parked alongside Route 350 in the town of Walworth, holding a girl he strongly believed to be Michelle Maenza by the wrist. When this motorist had stopped to offer assistance, the individual had deliberately "grabbed the girl and pushed her behind his back ,also obscuring his license plate from the motorist's view as he stared in his direction with such a menacing expression on his face that the motorist had felt compelled to drive away.
Maenza's fully clothed body was discovered at 10:30 a.m. on November 28, lying face down in a ditch alongside a rural road in Macedon, approximately 15 miles from Rochester. Her autopsy revealed that in addition to receiving extensive blunt force trauma to her body, Maenza had been raped, then strangled to death from behind with a ligature, possibly a thin rope. Numerous strands of white cat fur were discovered upon her clothing, and leaf samples matching the foliage where her body was discovered were recovered from within one of her clenched hands, indicating she had likely been strangled to death at or near the location where she was found. Investigators were able to retrieve a partial palm print from her neck and traces of semen upon her body and underwear. A forensic analysis of the semen samples determined she had been raped by one individual.
An analysis of the contents of Maenza's stomach revealed traces of a hamburger and onions which had been consumed approximately one hour before her murder, giving credence to earlier reports of a girl matching Maenza's description having been seen in the company of a Caucasian man with dark hair, aged between 25 and 35, approximately 6 ft tall and weighing 165 lb both at a fast food restaurant in the town of Penfield at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of her disappearance, and alongside Route 350 approximately one hour later.
All three victims were preadolescent females who had disappeared from Rochester in the early afternoon on days of light or heavy rain and whose bodies were later discovered within adjoining counties. The body of each girl had been discovered either fully clothed or partially clothed close to an expressway at a location typically accessible by vehicle and each victim had evidently been thrown from or carried from a car to the location her body had been discarded.
Each child was short in height, and all three girls had been raped before being strangled to death. In addition, all three were known to be viewed as somewhat lonely outcasts among their peers. Furthermore, an analysis of the stomach contents of both Walkowicz and Maenza revealed both girls had ingested food shortly before their death which neither girl is known to have eaten prior to her disappearance, and the bodies both girls had been redressed after death.
Both contemporary and current investigators have stated the possibility each victim had been selected due to the double initials of her name is extremely unlikely, as for an offender to preselect his victims for this incidental reason would likely involve his stalking his victim over an extensive period of time, thus increasing the risk of his being noticed. Furthermore, some investigators believe that, although the murders of Walkowicz and Maenza may have been committed by the same individual who had lured the girls to their deaths, the overall modus operandi of the murder of Carmen Colón strongly indicates her murder had been committed by an individual known—and possibly related—to her as opposed to an individual unknown to her, who had abducted her by force.
All three child murders generated intense public outrage; each received intense publicity. Following the murder of Michelle Maenza, investigators released a composite drawing of the individual seen with the child by numerous witnesses to the media. They also installed a telephone hotline exclusively devoted to the manhunt for the perpetrator, whom they strongly suspected had committed all three murders. Anonymity was again offered to any caller offering information, and a reward was again offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. Although these efforts resulted in numerous calls from the public, no credible suspect was located.
Although investigators interrogated more than 800 potential suspects in relation to the Alphabet Murders, the perpetrator or perpetrators of the homicides was never caught, and the case remains unsolved. As each child hailed from a poor Catholic family, had few friends, and had recently experienced issues such as bullying or poor academic performance at her school, investigators have not discounted the possibility the murderer may have been employed by, or held knowledge of the practices of, a social service agency in his efforts to initiate contact with and/or gain the trust of each victim.
In the case of Carmen Colón, her uncle, Miguel Colón, is considered by investigators to be a strong suspect in her murder. Miguel was the brother of Colón's father, Justiniano. Following the separation of Colón's parents, he had formed a relationship with her mother, Guillermina, becoming known to Colón as "Uncle Miguel."
Typically, on occasions Colón walked to the pharmacy to collect family prescriptions, she had been accompanied by her grandfather, Felix, although on the date of her disappearance, Colón had pleaded with her grandparents to be allowed to walk to the pharmacy unaccompanied.
Just weeks prior to Colón's abduction and murder, her uncle is known to have purchased a car closely matching the vehicle seen by eyewitnesses reversing upon Interstate 490 in pursuit of the child. Investigators did conduct a search of this vehicle shortly after Colón's murder, discovering the interior and exterior of the car had been extensively cleaned, and the trunk had been washed with a strong cleaning solution. Questioning of the dealership which had recently sold the vehicle to Miguel revealed the trunk had not been washed with a detergent prior to sale. Moreover, a doll belonging to the child was found in his car, although Colón's relatives informed investigators she had frequently traveled in Miguel's vehicle and may have left the toy in his car. Furthermore, according to a friend, two days after the death of his niece, Miguel had informed him of his intention to leave the country as he had "done something wrong in Rochester." He relocated from Rochester to Puerto Rico just four days after the murder of his niece.
Investigators did travel to San Juan to question Miguel in March 1972, although local newspapers published articles detailing police intentions to question him, resulting in Miguel fleeing from authorities. Miguel surrendered to authorities on March 26, and agreed to be extradited back to Rochester to face questioning.
Miguel Colón was unable to provide a credible alibi for his movements on the date of his niece's murder, and no individual could be located to corroborate his claims regarding his whereabouts. Despite strong circumstantial evidence attesting to Miguel's guilt, no physical evidence was located at the crime scene or within his vehicle to link him to the murder.
Miguel Colón committed suicide in 1991 at the age of 44 following an incident of domestic violence in which he shot and wounded both his wife and his brother.
One individual considered a strong suspect in the Alphabet Murders is a 25-year-old Rochester firefighter named Dennis Termini. Termini was a prolific serial offender known as the "Garage Rapist" who is known to have committed a minimum of fourteen rapes of teenage girls and young women between 1971 and 1973. He is also known to have owned a beige vehicle similar in description to the vehicle observed by several eyewitnesses to the abductions. Moreover, he is known to have lived at an address on Bock Street—an address close to the area victim Michelle Maenza had last been seen alive.
Five weeks after the death of the final victim of the Alphabet Murders, on January 1, 1974, Termini is known to have attempted to abduct a teenage girl at gunpoint, although he fled the scene when the teenager refused to cease screaming. Shortly thereafter, he abducted another potential victim, although on this occasion he was pursued by police, culminating in Termini committing suicide by shooting himself in the head. A subsequent forensic examination of Termini's vehicle did reveal traces of white cat fur upon the upholstery.
In January 2007, Termini's body was exhumed to obtain a DNA sample for comparison with the semen samples recovered from Walkowicz's body. The results of this test confirmed Termini was not responsible for her murder. However, no physical evidence retrieved from the bodies of Colón or Maenza exists for comparison with Termini's DNA.
Another suspect in the Alphabet Murders is serial killer Kenneth Bianchi, who at the time of the murders worked as an ice cream vendor in Rochester. He is known to have worked at locations close to the first two murder scenes. Bianchi had relocated from Rochester to Los Angeles in January 1976. Between 1977 and 1978, he and his cousin, Angelo Buono, Jr., committed the Hillside Strangler murders of 10 girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 28.
Bianchi was never charged with the Alphabet Murders, and has vehemently denied any culpability in the homicides. He has repeatedly attempted to have investigators officially clear him of suspicion. However, while residing in Rochester, he is known to have driven a vehicle of the same color and model as a vehicle seen near one of the abduction sites.
In April 2011, a 77-year-old named Joseph Naso was arrested in Reno, Nevada for the murders of four women in California committed between 1977 and 1994, all of whom are believed to have been prostitutes and all of whose surname began with the same letter as that of her first name. Naso was a New York native who had lived in Rochester during the early 1970s and who is known to have regularly traveled between New York and California.
Initially described by authorities as a person of interest in the Alphabet Murders, DNA testing has confirmed Naso's DNA is not a match to the semen samples recovered from the body of Wanda Walkowicz.
Naso was brought to trial on June 18, 2013, charged with the murder of the four California Alphabet Murder victims. He was unanimously convicted of each murder on August 20. On November 22, 2013, Naso was formally sentenced to death.

Tehnika i tehnologija - opremanje i postavka potrebnih uređaja

Napravite raspored u ormarima i komodama, gde će stajati odeća, a gde obuća, gde će vam stajati dokumenta, gde knjige, a gde kućni alati.

2020.06.26 19:11 Vectorial1024 Mod Request: Buses depart immediately if no boarding and alighting

In my city, buses are not required to stop at every stop between the termini, but in compensation, there are electric bells that passengers must ring to signal the bus to stop at the next stop so to alight from the bus. At the same time, passengers waiting at a stop must hand-signal the bus to stop at the bus stop to board the bus. This makes buses very fast in non-congested roads and less-populated areas, making them competitive against railways.
This of course cannot be implemented as-is into Cities Skylines because we do not know if there will be CIMs boarding or alighting the bus until the bus stops at a bus stop. However, what if we have something like this?
Feels like this can be done via Harmony. Anyone interested in making such a mod? I often feel that buses in Cities Skylines are way too underrated. And, the suggestion of "spreading the bus stops when there are too many bus routes stopping at the same stop" is too trivial IMO, and doesn't really reflect what is happening in my city (like, same bus stop, 9+ bus routes having a stop there, with not much obstruction because they can skip stops if there are no one alighting and boarding).

2020.06.20 02:32 1maco Center terminating Lines

I feel like Center terminating Line extensions should probably be a transit agency’s first priority. They have massive potential because they serve dense high demand areas of the city.
LA Metro has a lot of projects but I think the Regional connector which turns 3 center terminating Lines into 2 thru Lines will probably be the most transformational. This will allow people to make a 2 transfer trip into a 0 transfer trip with very little extra trackage. Boston extending the Green Line from effectively Downtown Boston vs say the Orange Line to Needham or Red Line into the suburbs also is obviously the best choice. (Next to a Red-Blue Connector which I believe is next on the Docket)
Philadelphia is a city where I feel like the focus is on the fringes not the core. PATCO and the Broad Street Line And Market Street Lines all have primary proposals expanding out from termini removed from the city. When PATCO and the Broad Street Spur terminate Downtown short (2-3 mile) extensions could serve many more people than massive ones further out. Like Expanding PATCO 2 miles to just past Philadelphia Children’s to the easternmost Surface Subway Line would both make it a useful crosstown Subway (creating Eastbound Traffic in the Morning) and connect NJ commuters to a huge employment center. Expanding the Broad Street Spur Southwards would serve very dense SE Philly.
Denver I think has a similar issue that with some reworking of Union Station like LA’s Regional Connector thru running service vs the everything ends at Union station would vastly improve service without a massive amount of new infrastructure.
I do understand that due to Transit usually being regional funded projects investing in a very small geographic area tend to be hard sells but I think some recent systems (Atlanta vs Dallas, Minneapolis vs Denver) tell us that smaller well placed systems preform better than build everything everywhere as cheap and fast as possible systems.

2020.06.14 13:08 Peacelovefleshbones Wanderlust Fellowship: a playstyle community

Originally posted on NMSGalacticHub but the crosspost didn't work, so here it is reposted again:
The Wanderlust Fellowship is a loose association of likeminded individuals united only by a common playstyle which I'll outline in this post. It is essentially a philosophical or even quasi-spiritual group that is focused on cultivating an experience of becoming lost, and removing oneself from the comfort of civilization. The Wanderlust Fellowship is for people who feel that their experience is enriched by the sensation of feeling small, alone, adrift, and most importantly one in which distances are made to be an important and significant obstacle to overcome.
There's no leadership, despite the fact that I'm the only member at the moment, but I'm reaching out to the Galactic Hub because I think a lot of people from this community will appreciate what this playstyle has to offer. I've been a longtime fan of the Hub but never an active participant, however the history of Pilgrim Star and the founding of the Hub was something that had always inspired me and found deeply fascinating.
This playstyle was created in the interest of increasing immersion and manufacturing hardship in No Man's Sky, which means that a lot of it revolves around ignoring certain QoL features. Your adherence to the rules outlined below is up to you, because the true spirit that the rules are designed to outline are that of immersion and exploration.

RULE ONE: TELEPORTERS

This encourages you to construct your own network of teleport modules, or to acquire a shared network or other players bases. Restriction of mobility is going to be a theme here. If you find yourself in desperate need to return to a previous base, you could use the teleporter built in to every space station... or you could begin your new objective of building a temporary base, building a power source, and constructing a teleportation module. I prefer the latter.

RULE TWO: FREIGHTERS

The first caveat about summoning your freighter is subject to change if they ever start consuming warp fuel when you summon them, but the spirit here is to give freighters more of a sense of object permanence. This leads to a playstyle where you may take advantage of a freighter's enormous hyoerdrive capabilities to make huge leaps across the galaxy, and then you use your starships to explore the surrounding star systems before returning to your freighter's star system.
You may choose to accept the free freighter but I personally refuse it every time.

RULE THREE: FOOD AND RECHARHING

Different foods provide different effects, but mostly they either recharge your hazard protection or life support. Early on this would be difficult because all the wild ingredients you find will only increase these by 5%, but it becomes much easier once you unlock the nutrient processor since most cooked foods provide 20%.
As a general rule, don't use sodium, sodium nitrate, or oxygen at all for these purposes. Rather, if you run out of food then try to construct ion batteries or oxygen canisters (or life support gel) instead. You'll likely have to know how to craft these anyways in order to refill hazard protection upgrade modules. With starships, use starship fuel with supplementary bits of uranium to top it off (because if you have an upgraded launch thruster, there will be a small portion of the fuel leftover that isn't enough to launch with when using starship fuel alone).
This rule directs you to engage with the environment in a more intelligent way, and to have to make (only slightly) more diligent plans when going out on excursions.

RULE FOUR: INVENTORY AND GATHERING

Try not to hoard random junk and elements in your inventory unless you know you're going to need them shortly. This is moreso a rule for keeping your peace of mind, but resources are crazy abundant in No Man's Sky. If you need something, it's not going to be difficult to find it when you need it. It's useful to note that exocraft and spare starships make good drop boxes if you have rare junk that you want to save for later, and don't feel like an exploit when you follow these rules and guidelines. Which brings me to the next one.

RULE FIVE: NO EXPLOITS

What defines an exploit can be difficult, especially in this game where everything is wildly unbalanced, but the spirit of the rule is to preserve immersion and manufacture hardship. Don't savescum for S-class ships, don't crash economies, and don't abuse the game's mechanics as a general rule. What defines an exploit is up to you and your interpretation.

RULE SIX: SURVIVAL/PERMADEATH

This is your choice, but the idea is that in survival mode there are features that don't exist in normal mode. When you get shot down in space, you crash on a nearby planet and have to repair your ship. Inventory is more limited (again, your preference). Your inventory items are lost on death, but can be preserved under certain conditions. If you die in your ship, your suit inventory will be preserved. If you die on foot, your ship inventory is preserved. Exocraft inventories are always preserved I think, and your high capacity slots are also preserved. This mindset just makes you think more strategically about what you're carrying, where it's stored, etc. Permadeath is just fun because of the inherent risk, but that's your choice.
And obviously I make an exception about savescumming if I was killed by a bug or glitch, but that goes for all games.
There are other rules that I personally play by in addition to these (for example I don't by starships, I only salvage and upgrade them) but the rules above I think are the most representative of the spirit of the Wanderlust Fellowship. These rules have helped me to play in a much more enjoyable way than the optimal playstyle that the game presents by default. I spend a lot more time traveling, exploring larger portions of planets and feeling more immersed because I'm not teleporting everywhere.
This post is an invitation to anyone who wants to claim to be a part of the Wanderlust Fellowship, but it's also a post to gauge interest. What are your thoughts about this, and if you are interested or already play similarly to this then how if at all would/do you play differently?
Edit: so my post was taken down from NMSGalacticHub for breaking rules about promoting a new community. Just FYI

2020.06.08 13:35 Bohrbrain The Gospel of John: The Reminiscences of the Beloved Disciple or a Late Invention?

Out of the other 3 gospels, the Gospel of John is the only one that claims internally to be the account of, at least partially, an eyewitness (cf. 19:35; 21:24). I will try to demonstrate that this claim by the gospel is accurate.
Raymond Brown writes:
The critical rejection of the historicity of John, so familiar in earlier critical exegesis, can no longer be maintained. We may still find writers stating that the Fourth Gospel cannot be seriously considered as a witness to the historical Jesus, but these represent a type of uncritical traditionalism, which arises with age, even in heterodoxy. (Brown, p. 187-188)

Internal Evidence

Archaeology (& Other Indicators) Prove Pre-70 C.E. Historical Data in John’s Narrative
Thanks to focused scientific archaeological work, it is now clear that scholars err in using only the Synoptics as sources for understanding the historical Jesus.
-First, John knows that stone vessels reflect Jewish purification rites. An aside in John 2 is archaeologically significant. The Synoptics do not mention the importance of stone vessels, yet John states that in Cana there were ‘six stone jars standing there for the Jewish rights of purification’ (2.6). This is a major datum that is grounded in Jesus’ time and place. Stone vessels have been found at the two sites vying for this ‘Cana’: Khirbet Kana and Kefer Kana. Stone vessels are designed for preserving the contents from ritual pollution, and they are found not only in the Upper City of Jerusalem but also in many sites of Lower Galilee especially the villages known to the historical Jesus. Almost all the stone vessels date from the time of Herod the Great to 70 ce , although some sites for manufacturing stone vessels continued in Lower Galilee, notably just outside Nazareth. In this one particular example, John is more reliable than the Synoptics and the tradition makes appropriate sense in pre-70 Jewish settings when the Temple authorities were mandating ritual purity for all Jews in Palestine. Moreover, when John reports that the miracle in Cana was ‘the first of his signs’ (2.11), the comment fits well with the Jewish emphasis on signs found in Josephus, Pseudo-Philo (LAB), and in other early Jewish texts.
-Second, John alone has knowledge of Jerusalem’s architecture. John’s description of Jerusalem and its environs is frequently now supported by the latest archaeological discoveries. Many archaeologists only recently are finding that John is indispensible in recreating and imagining pre-70 Jerusalem and the context of Jesus’ life and mind... Only John reports the massive stones in the pavement of Pilate’s palace: the Lithostrotos and Gabatha (Jn 19.13) which is a Hebrew word that does not translate the Greek and must be the name used by Semites in Jerusalem for the place. Now, massive pre-70 slabs of enormous stones are discovered precisely where Pilate’s palace, formerly Herod’s palace, had been located. John appears to report accurately the Bēma , the ‘high seat’ (19.13) where Pilate would sit and render judgment. These descriptions were either ignored or considered embellishments to an exciting narrative. Other details that seem incidental in John’s story are now appearing to be historical, according to archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem. Among them are the following:
The house and courtyard of Annas (18.13), the house of Caiaphas (18.24), Golgatha (19.17), the h. anuth , ‘meat market’, where the large animals for sacrifice were held, a garden tomb (19.17), and a room in which the disciples gathered (20.19-29). John knew that Solomon’s Portico was an ideal shelter from the cold winter blasts (10.22-23). Only John reports that there is a pool with five columned porticoes north of the Temple and a large pool probably south of it. Among early historians of Jerusalem, especially Josephus, only John reports these pools with surprising accuracy. Scholars thus judged these details to be created for theological or christological purposes. Now each pool has been located and each antedates the destruction of the area by Roman armies. The Pool of Bethsaida (Bethzatha) does have five porticoes and the columns can be seen today lying on the ground. The Pool of Siloam (9.1-12) was exposed recently when a sewer pipe burst. This pool appears to be the largest mikveh (Jewish bath for ritual purification) that antedates 70 ce . It had been buried under the debris from the First Jewish Revolt which ended in the burning of Jerusalem including the Temple. In addition, a monumental stairway leads from the Pool of Siloam to the Temple gates.
-Third, John alone knows termini technici characteristic of early Jewish thought before 70 ce . For example, he uses the term ‘Sons of Light’ which has been found in the most important document for understanding the Qumranites, the Rule of the Community. A highly developed dualistic paradigm of light versus darkness or good and evil once thought to be present only outside Palestine is now evident within Jewish Palestinian thought of the second century bce . The Logos concept draws our minds not to Heraclitus and the Stoics but to the Jewish debates over Sophia, Wisdom, and the divine intermediaries.
-Fourth, John preserves Palestinian debates anchored in problematic Hebrew scriptures. Only one example must now suffice. Genesis reports that God completed his creation on the sixth day and rested on the seventh day. Yet, Gen. 2.2 in Hebrew means: ‘And God completed on the seventh day the work he had been doing.’ That means God worked on the seventh day. John seems to know the debates over interpreting this verse to mean that God did not work on the seventh day (the reading of the Septuagint). John, knowing these competing traditions, has Jesus respond, with a surprising knowledge of the Hebrew of Gen. 2.2: ‘My Father is working still, and I am also working’ (5.17). Jesus was working, as his Father, on Shabbat (5.16).

__________________________________________________________________________________________
The Gospel of John and Jewish Customs.
Over the last two decades some scholars, especially D. Moody Smith, Urban C. von Wahlde, and Paul N. Anderson, have pointed the way for an improved understanding of the Gospel of John by recognizing that in many ways what is reported in the Fourth Gospel has as strong a case of representing reliable history as comparable sections of the Synoptic Gospels. More and more Johannine specialists rightly are perceiving that the Fourth Evangelist seems to know Jewish customs and the architecture of Jerusalem better, in some cases, than the authors of the Synoptics, intermittently describing features of this city missed by Josephus. Archaeological research and discoveries have also made a significant impact on Johannine studies.
John’s narrator explains Jewish customs and measurement features to distant audiences, seeking to account for developments and turns within the narrative. The capacity of the stone jars used for Jewish purification practices is described (holding about two or three metrētēa—twenty or thirty gallons, 2:6); Jews do not share drinking vessels with Samaritans (4:9); the day being the Sabbath meant no doing of work (5:9; 9:14); the Jewish leaders could not enter the Roman palace if they wished to eat the Passover, thereby avoiding Gentile-contact impurity (18:28); the Jewish leaders did not want dead bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, as this would be defiling (19:31); Jesus’ followers prepared his body according to Jewish burial customs (19:40). And, values and weights are noted: the feeding and the perfume were valued at 200 and 300 denarii (6:7; 12:5), and the weight of the embalming spices was a hundred pounds (19:39). Likewise, several distance measurements are referenced, corresponding with known realities: the middle of the lake is described as 25 or 30 stadia (three or four miles, 6:19), Bethany is just under two miles from Jerusalem (15 stadia, 11:18), and the boat to which Jesus presented himself after the resurrection was 200 pēchōn from shore (a hundred yards, 21:8). These sorts of details display first-hand familiarity with Jewish customs, measurements, distances, and other features rendered for distanced audiences somewhat removed from Palestine itself.

The Jewish Feasts and Questions of Historicity:
At least some of the feasts in gJohn are set in a pre-70 c.e. context, when the temple still stood and temple worship continued to take place, as John’s Gospel is increasingly thought to have been written by someone familiar with these practices and places at first hand (Bauckham 2006, 384). While some features of the Fourth Gospel make it clear that it was written after 70 c.e., the same details suggest that these accounts may have arisen closer to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple—perhaps even in response to this event—than has been recently assumed (see Motyer 1997, passim). At the level of the narrative, the accounts of these feasts are set within the ministry of Jesus. Here are a couple examples:

1.1. Tabernacles (John 7)
John 7 is set in the context of the Feast of Tabernacles... Jeffrey L. Rubenstein's... book (1995) is a detailed attempt to analyze and trace the development of the practice of the Feast of Sukkot throughout the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods. In his analysis of the Second Temple material, he references John 7 and connects it to Zech 14.10. In his later tracing of the development of Tabernacles, Rubenstein discusses the water libation ceremony and the accompanying prayers for winter rains. These become a part of the festival practice at some point. While Rubenstein notes that “no non-rabbinic source explicitly mentions the libation,” many commentators on the Gospel of John use the libation ceremony as a context for, and an explanation of, Jesus’ statement. It is in a situation such as this that we can evaluate the trajectory of thought indicated in John’s Gospel. For example, Rubenstein understands that “Zechariah 14 and John 7 indicate a connection between Sukkot and rain, but neither illuminates the specific rituals” (1995, 121). Jesus’ statement in John 7 may thus illustrate a point between the development of thought in Zech 14 and the later rabbinic sources. This statement in John 7 points toward a developing practice of the libation ceremony. Archaeological evidence has also been adduced to suggest that the libation ceremony is a pre-70 c.e. practice. Anita Engle, for example, has written on the discovery of glass bottles (or amphorisks) with tabernacle symbols on them, which may have been sold as souvenirs to travelers who had come to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. This is another example of the possibilities for cross-fertilization of disciplines with relation to this question.... The narrative that includes Jesus’ statement regarding living water is set on the temple grounds, during the Feast of Tabernacles, particularly “on the last day of this feast, the great day” (Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς). Jesus is said to have made a bold and emphatic statement regarding his identity in relation to the meaning and practice of Tabernacles—perhaps the libation ceremony or at least some incipient form of prayer for winter rains based upon the promises and content of Zech 14.

1.2 Dedication (10:22)
For two reasons, the Feast of Dedication had a much smaller role in post-70 c.e. Jewish practice. First, because Dedication is so centered on temple practice and in fact is centered on the existence of the temple itself, it played a much smaller role after the temple’s destruction. Second, the connection with rebellion against the oppressive power became much less popular after 70 c.e. (Schauss 1975, 228–29). Even in Josephus’s writings, the practice of this festival seems somewhat unclear (Ant. 21.323). The casual mention of Dedication and the thematic connections here suggest a setting before 70 c.e. and therefore potentially set within Jesus’ own lifetime...
Although there is no specific statement of memory here, a connection is still implied between the setting of Jesus’ utterance and the subsequent understanding and experience of the disciples after Jesus’ resurrection. Here again we see an apparent gap between Jesus’ teaching and subsequent understanding. In John’s Gospel it is in a postresurrection context that Peter is reinstated and, perhaps most provocatively, commissioned to follow Jesus as a shepherd of subsequent believers in a way commensurate with Jesus’ being the good shepherd of his sheep.

Conclusion
The Gospel of John’s strategy of using the Jewish feasts suggests that they are recollections from before 70 c.e. and further remembrances from a time before the Spirit was understood to be given to Jesus’ believers in a Johannine thought-world. That is, these narratives portray a time before his death and therefore within his lifetime. Again, while this analysis does not prove that these accounts definitively represent the ministry of the historical Jesus, it does suggest that scholars should at least allow the possibility that these accounts might indeed represent actual events from within Jesus’ lifetime.
(Paul N. Anderson, Felix Just, Tom Thatcher, John, Jesus and History, Vol 2: Aspects of Historicity in the Fourth Gospel (Early Christianity and Its Literature), 2009, "The Jewish Feasts and Questions of Historicity in John 5-12", by Brian D. Johnson, p. 122-125, 129-129).

Raymond Brown notes on p. xlii (John I-XII):
For the egregious blunders about Palestine once attributed to John, there is often a perfectly reasonable explanation. We shall try to show in the commentary that theological purpose—not necessarily a naïve assumption about the duration of the priestly office—guided the reference to the “high priest that year” (11:49). The exaggerated role of the Pharisees seems to be more a question of simplified emphasis than of an erroneous concept of their role in government. Anachronistic terminology like “the Jews” for Jesus’ opponents and Jesus’ use of “your Law” (8:17, 10:34) are more reflections of the apologetic tendencies of the Gospel than ignorant blunders...
At the very least, this all tells us that a decent chunk of material in John is ancient indeed. This leads us to the next section

Mimesis or Memory?
Given that John possesses more nonsymbolic illustrative details than any of the other Gospels, one inference among those swayed by John’s theological thrust is to infer that these details have been added, not as indications of first-hand contact with terrain and historical events, but as mimetic imitations of reality. While John’s verisimilitude certainly could have been added to make the story more graphic for later audiences, the fact is that Mark also possesses a good deal of this type of detail alongside John. If the inference is that this was a convention employed by contemporary authors, the case could be a worthy one. After all, Philostratus, in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana, renders a graphic narrative, so it is sometimes assumed that John’s narrative is simply fictive and not rooted in historical memory based upon a contemporary convention.
When analyses of the four canonical Gospels are performed on this very issue, however, the likelihood of such a convention being applied to John’s narrative falls apart, and it does so for three reasons. First, the canonical Gospels are closer to John than narratives about Apollonius two centuries later, so that is the closer genre comparison. Second, when analyses of Mark and the Gospel traditions making use of Mark (Matthew and Luke) are compared, they tend to omit details included in Mark, generalizing the detail instead of adding detail. Matthew and Luke will add units of narrative, but they overall omit names, places, and graphic details, sometimes adding generalizing statements about Jesus’ fulfilling all righteousness (Matt) or teaching his followers and others about the Kingdom (Luke). Therefore, if it is argued that the character of John’s prolific inclusion of detail is to be informed by contemporary parallels, the results point more directly in the direction of first-hand memory as opposed to fictive mimesis. Third, some of these details featured by John and Mark (200 and 300 denarii, green grass / much grass) are not repeated by Matthew and Luke, so if some sort of contact is to be inferred between the Markan and Johannine traditions this points to oral-tradition contact rather than written-tradition influence.
A thorough set of analyses between Synoptic parallels with John 6 and 18-19 shows that John and Mark appear to possess independent memories of Jesus’ ministry, despite impressive contacts. This likelihood is suggested by the fact that there is a good deal of nonsymbolic, illustrative detail in John’s rendering of these events in Jesus’ ministry.
As a result, the strongest critical inference is that despite John’s theological thrust, John’s narrative is a dramatized history rather than a historicized drama.
(James Chartlesworth with Jolyon G.R Pruszinski, Jesus Research: The Gospel of John, (2019) "Why the Gospel of John is Fundamental to Jesus Research" by Paul N. Anderson, p. 28-29)

Dale Allison Jr writes:
The points of general concord between John and the Synoptics, which are scarcely confined to shared sayings and stories, go far beyond the items just enumerated. Moreover, given how different John otherwise is from them (a fact to which I shall return), the agreements are significant. If they did not exist, if John were wholly other, we would almost certainly be faced with a catastrophic memory failure in at least one source; and surely that would make us wonder more than we already do about all our sources. But such agreements do exist, and they are the proof that, no matter how creative and different the Fourth Evangelist was, his work nonetheless incorporates a great deal of tradition, and in fact, I would affirm, much memory

The First Edition of John (~55-65 C.E.?)
As Raymond Brown says, there was a first edition to John. Urban C. von Wahlde, a contemporary mainstream Johannine scholar thinks that the Gospel of John underwent three editions, the first of which was written by an eyewitness, the second of which was written shortly after the first, and the third addition by disciples of the BD after his death, around 90-100CE. He thinks the first edition consisted of:
John 1:19b-c, 22-24, 27-28, 35b-36b, 37-42, 43b-49

Summary of the first edition
The examination of the earliest material in the Gospel of John has yielded a clear and consistent picture. There is nothing in this material that is either anachronistic to the ministry or that gives any indication of being unhistorical. The knowledge of Judea and the city of Jerusalem is detailed and accurate and almost always unique to the material we have examined. The fact that this knowledge is revealed even in matters of no consequence for the overall message of the Gospel is another indication of its authenticity.
(James Chartlesworth with Jolyon G.R Pruszinski, Jesus Research: The Gospel of John, (2019)"The First Edition of John’s Gospel in Light of Archaeology and Contemporary Literature?" by Urban C. von Wahlde, p. 136)

Of course, there are parts of John that can be debated, so the list isn't perfect by any means, but it is a good starting point. This is also not to say that the second and third editions don't add credible information (though it is possible that the majority of the time they don't). Indeed, there are numerous blocks of material that appear historical or at least partially historical. (i.e, material that is theologically interpreting history) in what is ascribed Urban's to second edition. One example of material that is late that also seems historically credible is the story of the adulteress:
-Gary Burge comments, “While this story has a problematic textual history, it bears all the marks of being an authentic story of Jesus” (Interpreting the Gospel of John [Grand Rapids: Baker, 1992], 181 n.6).
-Francis Moloney claims that even though the PA “plays no role in the Johannine account of Jesus’ presence in Jerusalem for the feast of Tabernacles, the passage is an ancient and precious witness to Jesus of Nazareth” (The Gospel of John [SP 4; Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1998],
-Ridderbos suggests that the pericope “evinces the character of an authentic tradition, not that of a fictitious story” (The Gospel according to John: A Theological Exegesis [Grand Rapids: Eerdmans. Dutch original, 1987, 1997], 286).
-Barnabas Lindars claims there is “no reason to doubt its authenticity” (The Gospel of John: Based on the Revised Standard Version [NCB; London: Oliphants, 1972; repr. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1981], 306).

External Evidence & The Beloved Disciple

In Favor of John Son of Zebedee
Acts 4:19-20 (~80-85 C.E.)
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
Paul Anderson writes:
Luke explicitly connects the apostle John with a Johannine saying in Acts 4:19-20—a fact that has been totally overlooked on all sides of the debate. Of course, Johannine authorship has been a knotty problem among scholars for two centuries, but one reason for excluding John the apostle from authorship is the view that Irenaeus was the first to make the connection, which he apparently does around 180 CE. This is problematic for two reasons: first, there is no other person connected with the authorship of the Johannine Gospel other than John the apostle, except, perhaps John the elder, both of whom Papias and others claim were buried in Ephesus. Hence the distinctions: “the elder” and “the disciple” (or even “the beloved disciple”) identifying two leaders sharing the same name. Irenaeus may be the clearest one to connect John the apostle with the Fourth Gospel, but may not be the first, as Charles Hill demonstrates.
Verse 20...is thoroughly Johannine; this fact has been totally missed within larger discussions, critical and otherwise. While Luke uses seeing verbs over 250 times and hearing verbs over 150 times, this is the only time he does so in this particular order, in the first person plural, and in the past tense, and the closest parallel in the New Testament is 1 John 1:3. When Acts 4:20 is considered in the light of the Johannine writings, Luke’s connecting of John the apostle with a characteristically Johannine saying is unmistakable.
Acts 4:20:
“For we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
1 John 1:3:
“We declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us.”
John 3:32:
Jesus “testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony.”
Of course, this does not prove that John the apostle spoke in these terms or that Luke was correct in connecting him with a Johannine saying.
(Paul N. Anderson, "Acts 4:19-20—An Overlooked First-Century Clue to Johannine Authorship and Luke’s Dependence upon the Johannine Tradition", p. 9-11 (2010))

Ptolemy (140-160 C.E.), as recorded by Irenaeus (~180 C.E.), also believed that the Gospel of John was authored by the "John, the disciple of the Lord". Irenaeus seems to have thought gJohn was written by John, Son of Zebedee.
Theophilus of Antioch (161-188 C.E.) also appears to attribute gJohn to John, independently and possibly slightly before Irenaeus. He says:
And hence the holy writings teach us, and all the spirit-bearing [inspired] men, one of whom, John, says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God," showing that at first God was alone, and the Word in Him.
P66 (~200 C.E.). No one has established that this papyrus is dependent upon Irenaeus' tradition, as P66 was from Egypt and Irenaeus wrote in Gaul. This Papyrus has the title

In favor of a Separate John
Papias (95-109 C.E.)
We know of a Elder (or presbyter) John figure who lived to the time of Papias' writing (95-109 C.E.). Papias:
But I shall not be unwilling to put down, along with my interpretations, whatsoever instructions I received with care at any time from the elders, and stored up with care in my memory, assuring you at the same time of their truth... If, then, any one who had attended on the elders came, I asked minutely after their sayings,--what Andrew or Peter said, or what was said by Philip, or by Thomas, or by James, or by John, or by Matthew, or by any other of the Lord's disciples: which things Aristion and the presbyter John, the disciples of the Lord, say. For I imagined that what was to be got from books was not so profitable to me as what came from the living and abiding voice.
Notice the difference between the the members of the 12 said, and what the Elder John and Aristion, disciples of the Lord, say. This fits in nicely with John 21:20-23, which implies that the BD lived to old age, since this John Papias speaks about is still alive at the time of his writing.
It is interesting to see that Papias quotes from or has knowledge of 1 John, gJohn (14:2) and Revelation.
[The same person uses proofs from the First Epistle of John, and from the Epistle of Peter in like manner...]

for the first will be taken up into the heavens, the second class will dwell in Paradise, and the last will inhabit the city; and that on this account the Lord said, "In my Father's house are many mansions"

With regard to the inspiration of the book (Revelation), we deem it superfluous to add another word;...Papias, Irenaeus, Methodius, and Hippolytus, bore entirely satisfactory testimony to it.
Even here, the identity of the presbyter John is not known for sure though. Some scholars still argue that the Presbyter John is John Son of Zebedee. The identity of the BD is heavily debated as well, and I'm agnostic. I've seen internal evidence thrown each way in favor and against favoring the BD being John Son of Zebedee. This post does not try and name the Beloved Disciple however.

2020.06.05 12:45 SAONS12 Trip Report: 4 Days in Rome

Happy Friday! A year ago, I packed up for my first solo (female) trip in Europe since moving to Germany. As a history and politics aficionado with heavy Italian heritage - Rome was at the top of my wish list. While traveling was curtailed in 2020, this trip remains my favorite of our year in Europe. I knew that it would be a fast and furious trip as our intent for 2019-2020 was to visit the "big ticket" cities so that we could spend the rest of our time here exploring more of the lesser known destinations. I purposely booked a pretty packed and tour-heavy itinerary so that I could get the most out of my visit. While this is not normally my style, I am very glad that I did because June is high tourist season so I was able to avoid all ticket lines. That week was also a little heat wave in the city (reaching 100 F/ 38 C) so getting early starts to the day was important.
Getting there: Lufthansa from Frankfort Airport to Rome Fiumicino Airport. Grabbed a train from the airport to Roma Termini. Lodging was about equidistant from the Roma Termini and the Colosseum on a main street so it made getting around by foot easy and safe.
Booking Sources:
If I did this trip again, I would have scheduled the sunrise bike tour the first morning and left the morning after a full day of touring free for self-walking.
Itinerary
Day One: I had flown into Rome later Thursday night, so I woke up early ready to hit the city. I'll admit to being public transportation adverse so I opted to walk the 4 km to the Vatican City (I would later regret this as I ended up clocking about 34 kms this day). I met up with the first City Wonder guide for a tour of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and St Peters. I'm so glad that I booked this with a group - we skipped all the lines and they provided us with an audio device so that we could hear the guide as she took us through the gardens, the halls of the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, private quarters, and St Peters. They were CROWDED but our guide was an expert at guiding us to an area where we could see everything yet not be in the way. The Sistine Chapel was absolutely stunning and I was able to stand relatively un-josteled in the center below the creation of Adam. Those were an amazing few minutes. After the Sistine Chapel, we toured St Peters and dispersed from there. If you're going to tour the Vatican in the summer - I cannot say enough about being smart about the right clothes. The dress code is strict - no exposed shoulders, no midriffs, no shorts or skirts above the knee. I wrote a light linen midi-length dress with Keds and stayed cool. The friends I made the tour wore leggings or jeans and suffered in the heat.
Two other travelers in my group were also doing the full day tour so we walked towards the Colosseum, grabbed lunch (and several spritzes) and then linked up with our second tour guide for a full tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Just like the morning, the second tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and gave an awesome and in-depth tour. The tour ended around 5-5:30 pm so I had just enough time to walk back to the B&B, shower, change, and then grab some wine for the hosts of the traditional Roman dinner in Travestere booked through EatWith. Rome was my first EatWith experience and I CANNOT recommend it enough - especially for solo travelling! I showed up to a walk up apartment that looked like a Travestere movie set. It was perfect. There, with about 20-some other travelers (strangely no other solo travelers) we ate and drank our way until after midnight. The hosts live in the apartment with their family and by the time you leave, you will also be a family member.
Day Two: Be careful with the limoncello. I woke up hungover and smelling faintly like lemons. I caught a taxi to the Roma Food Tour that started in the Porti neighborhood and focused on the area just north of the Vatican. The tour promotes itself as "more than 20 Food and Wine tastings, all "seasoned" with storytelling of our city, history and archaeological secrets" and it does not disappoint. The tour guides are all a group of friends that met while studying for their masters in Archaeology and ancient history in Rome so they're able to bring the city to life for you on the tour. That morning was a blessing with a cornetti and cappuccino before we worked our way through the biggest local market in Italy tasing prosciutto (they offered vegetarian options throughout the tour), aged cheeses, suppli, bruschetta, olive oil, and mozerrella. You're able to purchase from any of the vendors as the tour progresses. We then walked to peek into the longest running pasta lab in Rome, tried some Apulian street food, pizza (of course) and then gelato in a hidden place where the Pope fills his gelato cravings. Before breaking up, our group had cocktails on a roof top bar overlooking St Peters. Why this food tour has remained my favorite - the guides clearly have a great relationship with all their vendors. Groups are kept small and we never were made to feel like a burden or in the way. Also, the food was amazing.
After the tour finished around 1300, a nap was necessary. Once energized, I woke up and started chasing the "golden hour" of the major sights between Circo Maximus to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. The Trevi Fountain was absolutely packed but I managed to get to the front and toss a few coins in. Still haven't returned yet. I wandered the streets until I found a quite place to people watch and enjoy dinner with more wine.
Day Three: Feeling slightly more mature and smelling less like lemons, I took off on a self guided garden tour around Municipio II. Just wandering around cities is one of my favorite things to doso I set the goal of seeing the Galleria Borghese, Ponte Milvio, and Villa Ada Savoia. By the end of the day, I had walked a hole in my Keds. It was a great day of just getting out and leisurely taking in the city's parks.
That evening, I headed out to Pigneto which touts itself as the Brooklyn of Rome. This is a fairly accurate description. The neighborhood is much more "atypical" with architectural in-homogeneity as the area was expanded through a series of spontaneous and unorganized settlements. If you're looking for an edgier with lively night life and vibrant street art experience in Rome, you'll find it in Pigneto. I arrived an hour early to have time to explore the area but wish I had more time. Over the course of 90 minutes, we learned how to make different types of spritzes as well as the history of the spritz. It was a neat (and pretty cheap) tour in a apart of Rome that I likely would not have made my way to otherwise.
Day Four: For some reason, I left the sunrise ebike tour until the last day. The benefit is that I didn't miss any sights, the downside is that I would have to wait for my next trip if something caught my eye. Early in the morning is the perfect time for this tour because riding a bike through the streets of Rome is one of the craziest things I have done (and I went bungee jumping in South Africa). I was glad for the boost as we started the ride going up to the top of the Campidoglio Hill. The top reason that I highly recommend this tour too is that we got to the Piazza di Spagna and Fontana di Trevi before 0700 so they were NEARLY empty. That was magic and worth the early wake up.
After the bike tour, I returned back to the B&B to pack, made my way back to the airport, and then home.
For all the coins I threw in the fountain, I haven't been able to return yet. When travel is able to resume, I hope that someone find this trip report helpful!

2020.05.24 14:28 Rocknocker OBLIGATORY FILLER MATERIAL – Breaking Bad, Part 10

Continuing
Since I had a little extra time, I had him drop the personnel cage, which was about the size of a phone booth (remember them?) but made of welded ½” rebar, down through the hole in the foredeck of the ship. I needed to load a few items and figured why the hell walk up and down stairs when I had a personal elevator at my disposal?
Into the belly of the beast once again and I gathered up some of the more needful items. I had that crane operator, he of the surgical touch, hang me off the prow of that ship while I did what I considered a necessity, then over to the back side of the cut, over the top to the opposite side, and back again.
By the time darkness began to fall, I had completed all my extraneous wiring. The crane operator even deposited me ever so gently about 3 feet from my waiting motorcycle. Over the radio I thanked him again and invited him to come around tomorrow at 0600 for a few final checks. I’d save him a front-row 1000 hours seat to see what he had a hand in creating.
I went straight to the Raj as I was going to need my PPEs the next day anyways. Got in, parked my bike, went straight to the bar, had a couple of long, hard day at the office drinks, and retired to my room where I locked the door. After calling Esme and telling her I finally got my tickets home, well, the promise of tickets to at least to Dubai; that she should meet me at the Four Seasons as I wrangled it through my contract. We could wait out this silly viral lockdown in comfort on someone else’s nickel until they decided to open the Sultanate again.
We agreed that she’d meet me at the hotel in 3-4 days’ time; it seems she had some glasses made and they wouldn’t be done for a couple of days. Plus, she really enjoyed her mother’s company. Can’t argue with that. It means I’ll have to spend a few nights alone, on my own, bereft of human companionship, in a 5-star hotel in an international venue while it’s all being paid for by someone else.
I think I can deal with the upcoming hardship. It’ll be tough, but I think I can gut it out.
But first, there are some details to which I have to attend. There’s this package for Mr. Vikramaditya Shrivastava, the knot headed warehouse foreman who thought that by spending fewer rupees at a dodgy Hong Kong explosives purveyor that he’d be saving the company money. I’ll drop by his office bright and early tomorrow as I need to be out on-site very early, indeed, to make sure all is in readiness.
Also, there’s this box I have for our own Majordomo. He’ll be leaving tonight for his weekly shopping trip to town. Since I have bribed the floor-maid with ridiculous sums of rupees, she’ll let me in his room to deliver my present and has promised, up, down and sideways, that she won’t say a word to anyone.
I send off Sanjay’s and my latest reports to Agents Rack and Ruin, explaining that I’m far too busy to talk with them right now and that I want to finish what I started for fear of landing in the GULAG. I explain that I’m very querulous of Goodgulf Greyteeth and his brown-shirted minions. I tell them that I think his way of looking at things and assessing them are most at odds with the way I see things.
I make it as convoluted and misdirected as the wiring I did today on the boat.
I also tell them that I’m knocking off early tonight as tomorrow’s show time and I need a good night’s sleep. Especially for everything I’ve got planned with all the dignitaries who are slated to arrive.
If that doesn’t get their giblets tap-dancing, I’m not certain what would.
I hear my phones buzzing but after checking the numbers and seeing they’re not from Baja Canada, I roundly ignore them.
I decide that the new issue of Blaster’s and Quarryman’s Monthly would be just the reading ticket and retire to the bubbly tub with that, a bottle of Old Fornicator, a bucket of ice, and several cigars. Tomorrow’s going to be a big day; best to be rested and ready.
I’m up at 0500 hours, showered, shower-scotched, dressed, and at the job site promptly at 0600; right after I made a surreptitious delivery to a certain Warehouse Foreman’s office.
The Majordomo took possession of his package late last night, but I sincerely doubt he’s aware of that fact; or will be until I send an anonymous message.
The crane operator I paid last night was there as I mentioned I’d be in early to give the place a final once-over. After parting with a couple of cigars, a wad of rupees, and the promise of a front-row seat, I eschew the personnel basket and have him just clip onto my rescue harness. I need mobility at this point, so I gather up a few extra blasting caps, boosters, roll some Primacord in loops and hang it from the carabiners on the front of my harness or stuff them into one of many pockets. Then I give the thumbs-up “haul-away” sign.
“This is the cat’s ass”, I thought as I’m swinging around the outside of that old boat like some sort of aging Spiderman who’s really let himself go. I didn’t care that OSHA would have mailed me home sans bubble wrap if they ever saw this sort of stunt stateside, but that’s just the thing. I’m not stateside. Where else can I have such freedom in the world today to calculate the personal risk involved and decide that I can handle the hazards?
Sure, I could fall. I could get caught on an edge of very sharp marine steel and get sliced up a treat. Maybe several billion errant electrons go where they are not only not wanted but are insulated against, and in short, cause a short. I’d be a 22-stone charcoaled piñata, complete with diverticula-ed entrails and cinder-block liver decorations.
However, it’s my choice. I knew the job was dangerous when I took it. However, I also know how to mitigate the danger. For some, what I’m doing would be certain death. For me, who knows the ropes, circuits, and ins-and-outs, it’s a pleasant diversion to an otherwise boring day.
“Left 10 meters”, I call over the radio, and I swing over to exactly where I need to check some connections.
“8 meters due down”, I say and the bottom drops out. 25 or so feet later, I’m inspecting another circuit plexus. I feel like Arthur Dent and Slartibartfast is my co-pilot.
This went on for about an hour. I even had him drop me over the side, deep into the very bowels of the boat. I disconnect, hang the crane hook, and told the driver to hold on. I need to walkabout inside the ship and galv a few dozen connections. This is so much easier than futzing around with personnel baskets, scissor lifts, and my personal nemesis, stairs.
After another 30 minutes, I hook up and give a couple of pips on the radio.
“Going up!” I say as I whoosh past the hole we had cut in the foredeck. A few hand gestures later, and I’m de-hooked once again and on solid ground. I wave to my crane operator, he waves back and begins to drive off to his real job for the day.
No worries. He’ll be back, without the crane, for the 1000 hour kick-off time.
Since the show isn’t slated to begin, as I just noted, until 1000, I go back over to the portable office they had so thoughtfully set up for us and begin brewing the morning coffee. I rummage through my field case and am relieved to see that I have the necessary ingredients for Greenland Coffee.
And a fresh cigar.
At 0800 I get a call on the radio.
Sanjay is wondering if Mr. Maha is going to show up or if he should…never mind, there he is.
“See you in a few, Rock”, Sanjay says. He and the 24 other crew members will arrive here shortly. Nothing left to do but have a cigar and wait on the coffee.
The ship is beached and there’s a 250-meter exclusion zone around the beast. Cross where the flags are and not have the proper authority or business being there? You either are ejected off the worksite or perhaps into the local hoosegow. Don’t care who you are, no one crosses that line when it’s my watch and show.
So, I go outside and shoo Goodgulf Greyteeth and his cadre of brown shirts away from the ship.
“Good morning, Doctor”, he says smarmily, “Just admiring your handiwork. Wanted to get a good, close look before you demolish all your hard work.”
“Well”, I say, “I really hate to disappoint you, but you and your group need to get behind the flags now. Please, it’s for safety reasons. I can’t afford to have any sort of black marks on my record if one of you trip, catch a sensor, and get blown to smithereens.”
“Now Doctor”, Gulfy primps himself up to his full 5’ 5” height, “You seem to forget who you’re talking to here. I pay your salary…”
“No, Gulfy”, I remark, “You forget that in my contract, which you might pay but have also signed, names me as hookin’ bull, at all active job sites. You also seem to forget that I’m the Motherfuckin’ Pro from Dover, and what I say here is the law. All nice, legal, signed, sealed, and delivered. So, I not only do not care who you are, I have even less interest in what you have to say or what you believe. Now get behind the flags or I’ll have you forcibly ejected. We green?”
Gulfy looks like a whipped puppy. He may be a tiger in the boardroom, but out here, he’s just another fucking observer.
He relents and complies. A low “Green…” was his only word.
To try and assuage any bruised egos, I ask if anyone would like some fresh-brewed coffee.
No one says a word until Gulfy decides that, yes, he’d like a cup of my world-famous coffee.
The rest of his cadre is looking on and view me with such disdain and distrust that they’ll leave the entire pot for their boss.
“OK, your loss”, I say as I walk over to the office and get Gulfy his morning cuppa Joe.
“Here you go”, I said, handing him a travel mug, “Careful, it’s hot.”
He takes a sip, startles, looks at me, sips again and asks what wonderful blend I use to create such a fine cup of morning caffeine delivery system.
I explain the genesis of a Greenland Coffee and he sits back in his specially prepared VIP seat, smiles, and asks one of his minions if he has a cigarette.
“There ya’ go” I say, as I light up a huge breakfast cigar, “Now you’re getting’ the full picture.”
Gulfy looks at me and smiles wider. It seems we’ve had a breakthrough of sorts.
My crew arrives and since I’m just supposed to JAFO this project, well, more or less, I hold the usual morning safety meeting. I remind everyone that the job site is hot and anyone who crosses the flag line better have damn good reason to do so. I also remind them that there miles of wires and kilometers of det cord and Primacord that’s been strung. I also let them know the other name for this stuff: “Tanglefoot”.
“For fuck’s sake, you clodhoppers”, I say as many are still getting used to the idea of closed-toe steel-toed boots or closed-toed shoes of any description, “Watch where the fuck you’re walking. I don’t want anyone yanking out or tripping off a complex series of electrical circuits because they tripped over their own damned feet.”
They all nod, chuckle deferentially and smile wanly. My way of symbolically smacking them upside the head and not leaving a bruise still mystifies them.
“And, hey”, I say as I’m ready to dismiss them, “Let’s be careful out there.”
There’s a general agreement. It’s crossing close to 0900. I ask Gulfy if he and he alone wants to take a look at what’s going on here.
“After all,” I note, “We’re spending a lot of your money.”
Gulfy just smiles at me and replies, “If you are spending my money, I know it will reap great rewards.”
“Holy shit”, I think, “One Greenland Coffee and he’s sloshed.”
I’d best be off and brew up another pot.
Back in the office, I chat with Sanjay and give him the lowdown on the job. He’ll be running the show right after the full-chorus version of the Safety Dance. I’ll be more or less done here then. Out of the picture, I’ll just be on standby until I’m needed again; be that in five minutes or five years.
“Yeah”, I say, “Once they finish the Safety Dance and get out of the way. We’ll begin a countdown. At the call of 5, you hit the big, shiny red button. The rest is all automated, I hope.”
”Hope?” Sanjay asks.
“Fervently”, I reply. “Then once that’s all done and when Gulfy makes his inevitable after-blast crack, you use this”, and I hand him Captain America.
“What’s this?” he asks.
“A little present” I say, “The cording bundles are just to the right of the podium. Red is right, lemon-yellow is left. Hook up and press the first button. Galvanometer. Green. Green for go. Push the big, shiny red button once it lights, and you’ll see and hear some serious shit.”
Sanjay looks at Captain America.
“Use it in good health”, I say, “You’ve earned it.”
Hell, I can always just overhead another at Gulfy’s expense.
Sanjay is cofounded. Captain America, the Portable Electronic Blasting Machine, costs around US$650. He realizes that and he’s never before been presented with such a gift. Culture demands something of equal value in return.
I see his quandary.
“Just keep those fucking greenhorns out here from blowing their damned fingers off”, I say, “That’s payment enough.”
“Will do, Rock!”, Sanjay smiles, choking back the tears. The handshake afterward was particularly hearty and manly.
Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door.
“A knock?”, I ponder, “In a field office?”
“It’s open!” I holler.
Major Nakula Dattachaudhuri walks in.
“I hear there’s going to be quite the show in about 30 minutes, so I thought I’d drop by.” He smiles.
“Major!”, I say rather a bit too loudly, “How the hell are you? I’m so pleased you could be here.”
“Don’t you remember? You invited me.”, he smiles, “It would be…ill-mannered… of me not to take you up on your invitation.”
“Damn glad you could make it, Major. It’s going to be a hell of a show.” I say and see someone has accompanied our major.
“Oh please”, Major Nak says, “You remember my driver, Mr. Ranganekary? I trust there’s no problem him being here as well.”
“Of course not.”, I say, walking over to Agent Ranganekary to shake his hand and welcome him aboard.
We exchange some knowing smirks and both chuckle as we shake hands. “Glad you could also make it.”
“As am I, Doctor Rocknocker of Baja Canada.” He smiles.
“OK. Code. We’re going to have a chat later on, in private.” I note.
“Anytime is fine with me. Right after our little demonstration?” I say.
“Outstanding”, Agent Ranganekary replies with a grin.
“Coffee, gentlemen?” I ask, “Get it while it’s hot.”
It’s now going on 0945. I hit the klaxon to clear the job site. Everyone knows that one tootle indicates we’re 15 minutes out. Two and we’re 10 minutes away. Three and you’d better get the fuck off, out, or down and back beyond the flags. We don’t take headcounts, even though I tried to instigate that procedure. You get caught behind the lines, it’s your own damned fault.
Still, if there was an accident...hell, that’s why they work in teams.
I worry too much.
Two blasts and time’s getting close. I do an impromptu headcount and see everyone’s here and forthrightly accounted. That makes me feel a trifle less nervous. Guess I’ll fire up a cigar as I’m the master of ceremonies for at least the first half of the show. Got to keep up appearances.
The break siren in the yard goes off daily at 1000 hours. Today it announces the beginning of the ‘Dr. Rocknocker & Company Show’.
“If everyone would please take their seats, we will begin,” I say.
There’s a bit of bustling, but most everyone is seated and sorted. We have the Chairman of the Board out here today, the company CEO, several ministers, the town mayor, 25 newly-frocked blasters, the Major and his “driver’, plus another assorted bundle of workers, shop stewards, foremen, crew leaders, and other sorts of gawpers and hangers-on.
Time to schmooze.
“Welcome gentlemen and ladies, if any are present. Anyone here from out of town?” I wait for a chuckle or two. “I am Dr. Rocknocker and have for the last fortnight been training two dozen of your most clever, most impressive, and now most highly trained workers of which your company can boast.”
I make a grand sweeping gesture toward the accumulation and they all take a bow to the thunderous applause.
“Now, we are here to justify the layout of time, money, and energy. See, previously you would attack such a project as this very large cruise ship simply with hundreds of torchbearers. Dangerous, sloppy, and slow. A real waste of manpower, machinery, and materials. It was decided by the powers that be that they would take the chance that I could drag this company, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. Let’s replace the grunt manpower with chemistry, and let’s better utilize that manpower for something other than simply holding a flaming stick.”
There were nods and smatters of applause.
“So, I now present your first step in, if you’ll excuse my not-so-humble-opinion, the right direction. Gentlemen?”
The 24 newly-frocked ex-cadets expertly split into four teams.
“CLEAR NORTH?”
“NORTH CLEAR!”
And so on around the compass.
TWEET! TWEET! TWEET! Came the melodious tootles of 24 air horns.
“CLEAR?”
“ALL CLEAR!”
I’ve taught my guys well. I am swelling with pride; just a bit.
“Kisee bade visphot kee chetaavanee dena!”
“FIRE IN THE HOLE!”
I nod to Sanjay.
“10…9…8…7…6…!” and he hit the big, shiny red button.
Now my skills as a clandestine electrician come to the task.
At number ‘5’, a number 5, 5 meters tall by 3 wide, lights up with the intensity of a new-born sun. There are several, well, five, in fact, muffled explosions in the bowels of the boat.
Remember those 4” vertical pipe-footings I had welded in place? Well, they’re full of 60% Extra Fast dynamite and now detonating in strategically premeditated places. Just a sort of insurance, don’t you know? Priming the pump as it were.
After a few seconds, the millisecond delays, and all that wiring allow a giant number “4” to light up.
More muffled blasts. So far, it’s going great.
“3!” “Kaboom…kaboom…kaboom…”
“2!” “Kaboom…kaboom.”
“1!” and several 4” pipe-fulls of potassium perchlorate, titanium, iron oxide, and magnesium tetraoxide ignite and fill the cove with an unearthly bright white-hot light and sparkles.
“Ohhh…Sparkly!”
After that fades, the number board flashes brilliantly from each corner and the word “GO!” appears in 5m tall x 3m wide letters.
Seconds click by, and people wonder if there was a malfunction.
Malfunction? No. It’s just me being ostentatious.
With a huge “BLAMMO!” the 10 kilos of ANFO I had set in the middle of the number board lights off.
Immediately, all the various leads of detonation cord lights off and travels at 8,000 feet per second to their respective detonic termini. Suddenly, at 25,000 feet per second, kilometer after kilometer of Primacord go off and begin slicing through marine seagoing steel like a hot knife through an order of butter chicken.
It’s pre-etching the cuts we made in the hull, weakening them just a bit more before….
“BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!”
C-4 charges are going off, sequentially, beginning at the bottom of the hull and creeping, at some 15,000 feet per second, up the hull, over the foredeck, and down the hold.
The cuts are quick, clean, and clear. Now, with just a slight nudge…
“KA-MOTHERFUCKING-BOOM DE A-DAH!”
There it is. The 150 kilos of DOUBLEHEIX liquid binary lights off. All at once, bless its blasting velocity.
OK, yes. That was overkill. Why not? My last event here, at least for a while.
But oh, my. What a report. Short, sharp, and shocking.
With a whining screech of tearing metal from the very depths of Vulcan’s volcanic Forge, the entire prow of the once-proud cruise ship gives it up to gravity. With a wrenching rip, slashing snort, and rending rent, it plummets down whole onto the very beach sand before us.
“KER-FUCKING-SMASH!”
The whole area quivers a bit.
Some 450 tons of torn metal, plastic, and wood has just fallen some 10 meters vertically or so.
Gulfy looks up, and raises an index finger.
I smile, raise my remaining index finger, point to Sanjay, and mouth the words “HIT IT!”
He has Captain America primed and ready. He presses the big, shiny red button.
The prow section comes alive. She quivered 'n quaked. An' clutched at herself. As she tremored the beach as she was cut into twelfths.
The prow is being torn asunder from the inside by 60% DuPont Extra Fast Herculene Mining, Quarrying, Fucking Around, and Demolition Dynamite because I’m all soggy with nostalgia and a sucker for the classics.
It’s being ripped apart by explosions of lockers full of AFNO.
A couple of crusty cross-beams yield to several kilos of Kinestix solid binaries.
Some C-4 here, a dab of Tetraamminecopper perchlorate there, a little Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane, a spot of Cyclonite (RDX), a soupçon of PETN, and once the metallic screaming is over, we have pieces of a ship’s prow lying static on the beach in 12 easy pieces.
I turn to the spellbound if not shell-shocked crowd with a goofy smile, a blaze orange hardhat, and a cigar that needs to be relit.
“That, gentlemen, cost approximately $35,000 in both parts and labor. We reduced the ship by 1/9th its length with the expenditure of 25 x 2 man-days and the rest in high explosives. Given that it can take up to 24 months to traditionally scrap one of these cruise liners, I had just demonstrated a method where it can be done in a couple of months, with massively less exposure of your workers to risk, more environmentally friendly, and at a savings of millions of rupees.”
Ok, there was applause when I mentioned, as I closed the formalities.
“And that’s why I’m the Motherfucking Pro from Dover.”
There was applause.
I said “Thank you”, relit my cigar, and strode off the stage.
“My job here is done”, I’m thinking, as I walk back to the office. I was secretly glad it all worked out and also glad I’ll never have to do that kind of ornamental origami with wiring and explosives ever again.
At least until next time.
I go into the air-conditioned office and plop heavily into the desk chair. Stuff the coffee, it’s, well, not Miller time, but it sure as hell is potato-juice-and-citrus time.
Good thing I thought ahead and had a cooler with all the ingredients delivered beforehand.
Of course, there’s a meet and greet after the show. I mention to the dignitaries that have gathered in the office that we need to vacate as I’ve got a swarm of heavy equipment on the way to clear the beach.
“The blaster’s need to get to work on the next slice”, I say and look over to Sanjay who is smiling broadly as well.
We are to reconvene in the boardroom of the company as there will be a catered lunch.
I can hardly wait.
yippee
I spy Mr. Ranganekary over in the corner. I sneak over as well as I can sneak and ask him when he would like to chat.
“Do not worry, Doctor, He assures me, “We will have ample time later. Go attend what needs to attend. Worry not about me, we will have time to talk. Ample time.”
Not knowing what he meant by that, I decide to leave Sanjay in charge, as that’s now his mantle to wear. I fire up the motorcycle that has been so conveniently brought over for me and head back to the barn. I change into a clean set of coveralls but decide that a hardhat and safety harness probably won’t be necessary for a boardroom lunch setting. A box of cigars, on the other hand, well…
It was quite the sumptuous spread. All sorts of a mixed grill, samosas, egg rolls, noodle dishes, finger food, and full slabs of ham, veal, lamb, and roast beef; which I found both curious given the culture but delicious nonetheless. A full open bar was set up and I decided to make the shipbreakers pay for all my extra and subterfugical work. The bartender saw me coming and by the time I made it to his tip jar, yes, they are quick learners, he had already a stout cocktail waiting for me.
I spent the rest of the day answering questions and making certain they had all my banking information correct. I was quite gratified with I received a pair of buzzes on my cell phone telephone where it was my bank telling me of the renewed vigor and turgor in my personal accounts.
I needed to cut loose of this shindig as I needed to pack and also to get my plane tickets. I was leaving on the red-eye express tomorrow at O-dark-30, but haven’t heard a word about ticketing.
“Ah, yes, Doctor; about that,” Gulfy said, somewhat unsteadily. “The airports are still closed in the Middle East and it’s been impossible for us to sort out your departure tickets.”
“Yes?” The fuse was lit. I wanted out of here. You’re not going to use this Corona craziness as some sort of ruse to keep me here, you sawed-off son of a …
“So we have arranged for a private jet to take you to Dubai”, he smiled, “If that’s acceptable.”
Anger evaporated. “Sure, I suppose that will work.”
“At your disposal”, Gulfy said, “Major Nakula Dattachaudhuri will accompany you.”
“Ah!” The penny, once again, drops. “So glad to have you along, Major!”
“And his driver?’ I wonder.
I left the soiree after shaking the hands, exchanging business cards, and pledging to stay in touch with what seemed like a veritable platoon of people. Some will be high on my re-contact list as they might just have a few little odd jobs for me. It seems that there were representatives of other shipbreaking companies in attendance.
“Well”, I supposed, “If nothing else, I do like their hospitality and willingness to pay through the nose.”
Back at the Raj, all my clothes, except for what I was wearing, were cleaned, pressed and ready to be packed. I allowed the floor maids into my room while I rustled up a fresh cocktail and watch them pack my aluminum hard-cases like the consummate professionals they were.
They spoke no English, I no Hindi, but the wads of rupees I passed over to them spoke volumes. They deserved it. I could go to work and not even spare a thought about domestic duties. These gals, and guys, here did so for me without so much as “Oh, I need a…”
After shooing them out, I called the Majordomo and asked when the jet would be ready. He told me anytime I was.
“Well, fuck this”, I said, “Es won’t be in Dubai for a few days. There’s no reason to rush. Let’s plan for a morning flight at 0600 tomorrow? Green?”
Mr. Kanada agreed on my choice of color. He would leave a wakeup call for me at 0430. He would alert all other concerned parties as well.
I loved that. ‘All other concerned parties’.
“Ha, Mr. America’s Hat, your choice of terminology belies your ulterior motives” I think.
“That’s fine.” I said, “I’ll be in repose this evening; many things to consider before returning to launch point. I’ll be awaiting my wake up call.”
Before I get all unclothed and comfortable, I call the kitchen and order up one of the sandwiches I’ve taught them to make during my stay. Fresh bialy roll, lightly toasted, strips of ham, roast beef, melting cheese, some grilled onions, and green peppers. A cheesesteak of sorts, but I like mine with swiss and paneer rather than provolone.
“Oh, and send up some ice and a bottle of White Mischief 101 if you would be so kind. Also, some sliced limes and Bitter Lemon, if you have them.” I add.
Not 15 minutes later, I’m finishing off the sandwich and refreshing my drink. I’ve already called Es and told her of my belated departure. She’s pleased that now I won’t have so long to stay at the hotel alone and get into trouble.
“If she only knew…” I mused.
“Hell.” I remembered, “She does know! Fuck. I’m such a damned Boy Scout”
I haven’t chatted with Rack and Ruin for days and I figured they’re beside themselves. I break down and figure as long as I’m leaving tomorrow, I’d spill the beans, yank their chains, rattle their cages, and poke them in the snoot, all metaphorically, of course.
I ring their office numbers and I get that they are “in dispose” and if I leave a message, “they will return my call at their earliest convenience.”
“Aw, fuck.”, I think, “They’re off on some sort of mission or job or whatever the fuck they do when they’re not bothering me. Ah, well. I tried.”
I left them a message consisting mostly of “Priviet, comrades!”, "Workers of the world, unite!", and “Nostrovia!”. Y’know, the usual sophomoric attempts at political and social satire and humor.
I also tried to not let it bother me too great that they weren’t available as I settled back into the Jacuzzi with a new cigar, a large fresh drink, and this month’s issue of “The Quarrymaster.”
The night progressed as nights do. It was dark, sudsy, and quiet. I finally caved in around 2300 hours and plopped into the acre-sized bed. I slept the sleep of the overtly righteous until exactly 0430.
“Thanks”, I croak into the phone and drop the receiver back into its cradle.
“Time to motivate”, I remind myself. I hot the opulent shower one last time, erase a couple of shower scotches, and steam up the whole room so much it looks like the windows are bleeding from the inside.
“Damn, it’s positively tropical in here”, I growl as I dress in my travel finest. The usual field outfit, but this time with orange and green argyle socks from Scotland.
There’s actually a Pringle of Scotland brick and mortar store here in Alang. These socks were the best worst color and design I could find. I tried to find blaze orange ones, but oddly I was informed “there wasn’t much call for that around these parts, Squire.”
Maybe next time.
I called the room clerk and almost immediately, there was a knock at my door. Evidently Mr. Kanada, the Majordomo alerted the staff of my itinerary. It makes me almost feel bad I left that faux crate of dynamite in his room.
But he should have known better to snoop around on me. I hope all he gets out of it is a skip on his electrocardiogram. Anything else, and I might have to place some calls and own up to my tomfoolery.
My luggage, except for my field pack is loaded on a cart and I was assured it will be in the gray Ventura limo in the garage anytime I wish to leave. I tell the doorman that I appreciate that and slip him 500 rupees.
I need to go through that time-honored and exasperating event now when one checks out of a long term stay facility. Tips for everyone. C’mon, it’s not like you can’t afford a little largesse now, you old sod.
I leave fat-stuffed envelopes for the room matrons, which I had Sanjay address for me the other day. They deserve it. That room was insanely clean, well-stocked, and above all comfortable.
More tips for the room captains, bellhops, bartenders, cooks, cleaners, hell, if you aren’t a guest here, you get a tip. That makes it so much easier.
Down at breakfast I decide to forego a heavy meal and just snack on a few of their wonderful grilled breakfast sausages and a cup or two of my ‘special blende’ coffee.
After checking out the headlines in the reading room, I go to the bar where all my Emergency Travel Flasks are topped off and I gratefully accept a “Visit Alang” thermos cup full of my favorite libation in the entire cosmos.
A free drink.
Just so happens that his is one of cold potato juice and freshly squeezed lime juice with a splash of soda. A new Rocknocker variant that goes in the “Big Book of Favorite Cocktails”.
After shaking hands with everyone, I see it’s gone around to 0500. Time to get a move on myself.
Over to the one gray Ventura limo that’s idling in the garage and see its Major Nakula Dattachaudhuri in the back with Mr. Ranganekary as the driver.
“Well”, I smile, “That’s convenient. One-stop. No waiting.”
“Indeed, Doctor”, Major Nak replies, “Shall we?”
I smile crookedly to Mr. Ranganekary as I wish him a gracious good morning and pile into the back of the vehicle.
“I see you have all the absolute necessities”, Major Nak laughs as he notes my garish travel mug and a pocketful of cigars. He plucks one of the cigars from my vest pocket and looks at me line “May I?”
“Of course”, I smile back.
I ask Mr. Ranganekary if he’d like one and he replies, “Thanks. I already have some on the plane.”
“Well” I note, “There’s that question answered.”
With no traffic to speak of other than the usual delivery trucks driven by essential employees, we make great time to the airport.
Past the main gate, past departures, past shipping and receiving and past anything that looks like a terminal building. There it is, the same old shack where I was greeted into this county. We park and I go to take my passport for its usual departure tattooing.
Major Nak asks for my passport. He says he’ll handle the departure formalities. He also says he’ll meet us back on the plane. I’m not terribly keen on relinquishing my passport to anyone, but if you can’t trust a major in the Indian Armed Forces, who can you trust?
We wheel up to the same Gulfstream G700 jet that brought me here. Now, instead of Seoul to India, it’s India to Dubai, UAE. It’s just a puddle jump across the Indian Ocean, some 3.5 hours in duration.
“Guess I’d better get started”, I say, and take a long, healthy pull on my drink.
Thus sated, I’m up the steps and into the forward left-hand seat of the aircraft. Agent Ranganekary takes the seat behind me and within a few minutes, Major Rak arrives, hands me my passport, and asks if I need anything.
“Well”, I said, shaking my now empty Alang thermal mug, “It is sure hot and thirsty out there.”
Major Nak smiles, nods his head, and says loudly: “Dusty as well. Vijaya!”
Vijaya appears out of the back with an expertly crafted and exquisitely large drink for me. Major Nak looks at me, looks at my drink, and shakes his head. He asks Vijaya for a hot Earl Grey tea, with milk instead.
He looks at me, looks at my drink once more, and says “No way. I vaguely remember the last time...”
I just smile, grin, and sit back to enjoy what I could really get used to as a means of transportation.
The flight was smooth, pleasurable, and uneventful. We were up at 57,000’ again and pushing the bitter edge of the sound barrier at Mach 0.93.
We were in Dubai International, at the military end of the airport, within 3 hours and 19 minutes.
A large SUV cab arrives and tarmac workers begin stuffing all my gear into the back. I note a haversack and one lonely carry-on joined the pile.
It seems that Major Nak and Mr. Ranganekary were going to spend a day or two in Dubai as well.
It seems they were going to stay at the Four Seasons Hotel as well.
It seems to me that something might just be up.
To be continued.

2020.05.22 16:31 AlekseyLamanov My Ideas

I will try to express my ideas related to how to put anarchism in a relevant position in the modern world, which I have formulated over the course of maybe 4 months. I will first write them in English, and then in Italian, my mother tongue, so that if I translated badly some Italian comrade can correct me. Please be honest and comment about improvements or why they are not viable/right/really anarchic. Also, I'm not an Ace in Theory, and here I'll be using Proletariat for anyone (even rich people) who doesn't hold positions of political power or gain his wealth through exploitation of others, and Burgeoisie for the contrary. The part in English will simply be a translation by Google Translate, I'm sorry for my laziness but I don't want to rewrite all of that text and translate it lol. Please forgive me my English-speaking comrades. I someone wishes to help to translate it, he's welcome. Maybe in the future I will repost with a translation made by myself. I hope many people will read it, I really think these things and would like to be able to see Anarchy achieved in my lifetime, and maybe be responsible in part for it ;).Please Mods be kind, before you remove it message me. I will remove it myself, but I put a lot of effort into it and I want to at least copy it and save it somewhere, before it gets lost into the oblivion. Thx :)
---English---
For some months now I have been thinking about how large-scale anarchism could be implemented in the modern world in which we find ourselves. I have always opposed the Revolution, both ideally (being an anarcho-pacifist I find that violently imposing one's thinking on others is not only wrong, but is a direct copy of capitalism, previous systems and their methods) and as a practical concept: forcing so much people living in a system that relies so much on the benevolence of others would easily create many problems. I am also opposed to classical Reformism: it is impossible, as we well know, to apply it to anarchism. But I thought of two alternative methods to make it possible for us to be able to live the way we want. I also found that another action would also be needed: being able to move the Overton window to understand anarchism as well. Without it, everything would be much more difficult. For this reason we should be more present in the political scene, abandon confusing protests such as certain actions of Antifa (which I have always doubted, often cause more damage to the innocent Proletarian, such as for example by smashing the car window, than at the Borghese). Indeed, we should eliminate the forms of violence from our actions, since these can be very easily used by the bourgeoisie to paint a credible image of stupidity on the anarchist. Also, I am sorry to say, we should stop using words like "comrade", "Proletarian / Proletariat" and "Bourgeoisie/ Bourgeois", although I will use them the same here for simplicity. These make the anarchist environment seem a closed, restricted, almost a sect (taking up the common thought of much of the population of ideology as "religion"). If you think about it, no movement inside the Overton window uses terms like that. So what I would propose is to protest, yes, but limiting violence, vandalism (even graffiti) and too big themes like criticism of the capitalist system itself. We should therefore protest about something tangible, not too extensive but not too limited, proposing a feasible change (see the ecological protests, in my opinion they did a more than excellent job, also managing to convince the boys to participate and reaching worthy numbers of note ) such as the closure of a certain nuclear power plant nearby (for example, but also a change in certain laws). If we do this not only do we avoid that our dream does not come true in our life, but we also ensure greater power in terms of people within the movement that could guarantee us a lever to tear up improvements for our life (or, who knows, also for that of comrades abroad by pressing with our now acquired political power over even foreign governments). In short, the premise would be to ratify an organized movement (perhaps like the IWW) that can be found within the ideas acceptable to the majority of the population, such as, thanks to the work of the Fridays for Future and Greta Thunberg, ecology is now . Having said that, there are two methods to be able to achieve anarchy in large municipalities of more than a hundred people;) The first I had thought of was, quite simply, to use our newly acquired political weight to make a final proposal to the government: to make a region highly autonomous where we have a great consensus so that we can organize ourselves into municipalities. It would be a Gandhi-style thing, where people organize and strike / protest throughout the country. By now, being inside the Overton window, the Proletariat of the country should at best look at us with disdain, if not understand our ideas and unite. At least it shouldn't be the dominant thought "Anarchists are barbarians." The second idea actually came to me thinking about the disgust I feel seeing Capitalism exploiting needs, human rights for profit. I actually didn't think of it until the conclusion, but it could very well be part of our effort to move the Overton window and live better within the current system. The idea is basically to transform the state a bit like a reformation, but that would work, in fact remaining uninvolved in the state. The idea is to implement extremely humanistic reforms (which at the moment I believe are still outside the Overton window of the common Proletarian) with the aim of removing Capitalism from the possibility of exploiting wage slavery using the state, starting from UBI (if you don't know it, I warmly invite you to inquire, it's a concept of extreme interest. The easiest way would be to watch Kurzgesagt's video on it) and then move on to free bottled water through the acquisition from part of the State of the Companies or the payment of the factory price + a quota to the producers. We would then move on to food, to health (which many countries do not have, and which perhaps should also be treated with more consideration and priority than water and food, which many already manage to access), then move on to other human rights and needs and end up with housing. This would serve to bring the population closer to humanist concepts, and bring us closer to the realization of anarchy (this time even more simply on a global level, I think). Okay, I guess I'm done. Give me your opinions, they will be more than accepted after the hard work of writing all this. I also realize that I have approached more socialist / Marxist positions in the second proposal, tell me what you think :)
Good life, comrades.
---Italiano---

Prawda?

2020.04.29 08:42 EpicClapton Medical deck for the general public?

Hi /medicalschoolanki,
over at anki (here), some redditors from outside the medical field brought up the desire to gain some general medical knowledge.
u/DrEbstein, u/gamechangerI and u/DntTouchMeImSterile then raised concerns: The medical decks are not made for general knowledge; they are narrowly tailored to exams; even practitioners don't need the knowledge.
My question: Do you know of any medical knowledge decks that are suitable for people who have had no education in the medical field?
Some criteria in my opinion:
edit: Maybe not only about medicine, but about health.

Pojechałam petsittować psiaka, a wróciłam z kocią mamusią i jej synkiem. Koty „prześladują” mnie, gdziekolwiek się nie udam. Chyba zaczynam wierzyć w przeznaczenie.
Liptowski Mikułasz to miasto bardzo dobrze znane Polakom. Liptowska Mara i pobliska Tatralandia to atrakcje przyciągające tysiące naszych rodaków, zwłaszcza podczas majówki, czy sezonu wakacyjnego. Mnie w turystycznym okresie przyszło opiekować się pieskiem znajomych, którzy mieszkają w pobliskiej wsi, Liptowskim Trnovcu. Chacha, suczka rasy hawańskiej, przywitała mnie merdaniem ogonka i przyjaźnie wywieszonym jęzorkiem jeszcze w Krakowie, skąd John i Ellen, moi znajomi, odebrali mnie i towarzyszącą mi osobę.
A potem wybucham płaczem.
Happy ending... prawie
