COVID-19 Update + 13 City Review - May 26, 2020
REGULAR DAILY UPDATE + 13 CITY UPDATE
I'm really touched by all the notes of thanks from you. I try to answer longer comments or questions, but the activity in the last two days has really picked up. If I don't get time to upvote your note or tell you thank you, please be aware that I read all the comments and I am very, very appreciative of all the support, ideas, suggestions, and error corrections coming from you.
I've bundled in an update on 13 cities in SD County. Also, I've changed a couple of the charts to the new format - "people per case" - which I asked you about yesterday. The response was pretty clearly in favor of this, where it's practical. I found that it makes sense only when you're dealing with fairly large numbers. If you use it for fatalities, for example, then you get back to huge numbers again, like 1 in 50,000.
THE DASHBOARDS - LOCAL & 13 CITIES
By the time you read this, the U.S. will have passed the milestone of 100,000 deaths, and the world will have passed the 350,000 mark. Fortunately, yesterday was the lowest death toll for the U.S. in quite a while, with 498. Let's hope that continues. Cases have also dropped a bit, from the middle 20,000's to 19,000+. All that's on the right track.
Except in California. The case increase of 3,429 was the highest in a while, and brought the total very near to 100,000 cases. As in the rest of the country, the wearing of masks and social distancing is becoming more and more political. Tonight, I even saw a comment on my local NextDoor from a young woman who compared the requirement to wear a mask with the law passed in Germany to require Jews to wear a gold star. Amazing, and sickening.
The mini-charts on P. 2 show a downward trend for cases in the U.S., but nothing like that anywhere else. SD County is still on a plateau, but SD City, Encinitas, and California are trending upward. So is the world, and fairly steeply. COVID-19 is now rapidly getting out of control in many places around the globe with inadequate healthcare systems, virtually no testing, and densely packed population centers, e.g., Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Karachi.
The good news mini-chart is from California, the US, and the world on fatalities. There the trend is very much in the right direction.
The 13 city dashboard colors highlight San Diego city with the most serious problems, a split between Chula Vista and National City for second, and El Cajon in third. The mini-charts show the growth in daily new cases in those areas as well.
THE BIG CHARTS
Cumulative Cases: With the exception of Encinitas and Carlsbad, the rest of the localities are moving up at about the same pace. The US is now at 1.8 million cases, and close to 100,000 of those are in CA.
I won't repeat what's in the explanatory text by the People per Case chart for the local update, except to say that the difference between SD city and north county is remarkable. That may explain why some ignorant people up here refuse to wear a mask. If there's only 1 case per 1,500 people, the odds are you don't know anyone who has the virus. But if you live in SD city, you very well might.
It's the next People per Case chart for 13 cities that really shows the difference. The average American might know about 500 people, but really only around 100 to 150 of those people are family, close friends, or regular contacts. So if you live in one of those cities near the floor of the chart -- Spring Valley, National City, El Cajon, Chula Vista -- then someone in your immediate network very likely has been infected or has died. It's no longer an abstraction for you, or at least it shouldn't be.
Daily New Cases: A nice downward trend for the U.S., where typical days produced 100+ new daily cases and now they produce 70. Even though a lot of that reduction comes from NY (I'll do a 5 state update later this week), it's still a welcome change. Look at the faint blue trendline for CA, though. Not going the right way. The trend is even worse for SD City, and as pointed out yesterday, this is primarily because of zip codes 92102, 92103, 92113, and 92154. Fortunately, the doubling days are a bit over one month, so hospitals aren't getting overwhelmed - yet.
Testing: Up to 14 million tests have been conducted in the US now, and 1.6 million in CA. SD County has done 134,000. Those are all good numbers, but testing is one leg of a 3 legged stool. The other two legs are case tracking and isolation of people found ill. No stats on those that I can find. Imagine if you were asked to invest in a public company, but all they would tell you was their gross sales and gross profit. You wouldn't spend a dime on a company like that, no matter how high their sales were. Same with the lack of reporting on case tracking.
Stay well, everyone!

2020.03.11 10:15 nikhil_no_1 Training GPT2 Language model on Hinglish (Hindi + English) twitter data

I am working on building a few NLP apps for Twitter data. First up I am building a tweet generator which is trained on a specific set of users. I am using this repo ru_transformers as reference. Big thanks to Mikhail Grankin for sharing his work and providing such detailed write-up. So far I have trained it on a very small dataset (~20 MB). Idea is to have an overfitted model so that I can see all the pieces are working fine, before I jump into training on full dataset. In the training dataset, I have one tweet on each line with empty line between tweets. I am using YTTM tokenizer as instructed in the write-up. So far, I have only done little pre-processing, removing extremely short tweets. Other than that I want to keep all other information intact. Most of the tweets are written in Hinglish (hindi meaning words in english language) with good percent of native hindi words also present along with lots of emojis.
Here are a couple of examples of what the model is generated on this extremely tiny dataset. Prompt is what I specify and model returns 3 samples.
Prompt: "we need to" { "replies": [ "ting to the law of the state and state leaders. Our judiciary needs water listing our government also as our cooperation.\"
One obvious thing that I need to fix is these "

2019.07.04 19:33 Nekomata1037 Jikan Server Migration + Service Improvement

This is a follow-up to last month's announcement regarding resource and hosting problems.
We are pleased to announce that we've had received patronage thanks to a handful of people. We really appreciate the support and are super grateful for the help received.

Server Migration & Scaling

We have been able to scale in order meet the demand. Here is the current running spec:

Master Server

(EU) Frankfurt [10 GBp/s]

Worker Nodes

(EU) Frankfurt [1 GBp/s]
(EU) London [500 MBp/s]
(US EAST) Ohio [500 MBp/s]
(US WEST) California [10 GBp/s]
(Asia Pacific) Mumbai [500 MBp/s]
(Asia Pacific) Tokyo [200 MBp/s]

Network Improvements

We've now also switched to a Direct Server Return network, which allows the response to be made directly from our worker nodes to the client instead of having it reverse proxy through the master. Furthermore, the request made by the client would be handled and responded by the nearest worker node to the client.

Performance Improvements

A common issue with the API since the past few months was it returning HTTP 500 at some times. This was due Redis not being able to hold the amount of data that was going around in the RAM. With the release of v3.4-RC1, we have switched to file caching for requesting with the cache method being set to queue (for those interested in the running operations). This switch will resolve any low resource issue that was being caused by Redis - which essentially meant downtime until we manually resolved it.
These measures have significantly improved performance and response timings. Response timings for cached requests are as low as 100ms~. And RAM usage is under 500mb for each node. File cache can be expected to go up to 4GB~.

Thank you for your support and patience!

We're dedicated to keep this API running without downtime and keeping a seamless experience. We'd like to thank our supporters again for helping us achieve this!
Also a shoutout to assintates for helping set up this new faster and optimized network for the API!

Going Forward

Amidst the announcement of MyAnimeList's own new API (which is in the works), we have our own plans for the Jikan API. We are confident that even at this stage that the official API would not be sufficing in a lot of areas which we're headed for.
Some highlight features that we're planning:

Archived MyAnimeList anime Fansubs data

With iBzOtaku 's help, we're bring back the deleted anime fansubs! This is only for the anime that have had anime fan subs information. The data will not be available for new anime as the fansubs feature does not exist anymore on MyAnimeList.

Relational IDs

We're working on collecting IDs used on other platforms for an Anime or Manga and feeding them into Jikan's responses as well. Currently targeted platforms are AniList & Kitsu (with more in the future).

And more!

Visit our Trello Board: https://trello.com/b/Jw1rs467/jikan-api
We're open to suggestions and feature requests. Feel free to make one (or more) in this subreddit or on Discord.

2019.03.04 04:27 sotu Is my dream possible? (google fi + what?!)

Alright Google-fi fam, I need your help.
I am a long time verizon Unlimited Data grandfathered contract user. I pay a bajillion a month for my grandfathered data plan on verizon and I am OVER it. I went traveling for 2 months and brought a Google Fi sim with me.. absolutely a game changer. I landed in Goa, Bangalore, Mumbai, Instanbul, Paris, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, and Seville... AND HAD SERVICE EVERYWHERE!!! this is a huge win for me cause I travel like this often while working. Biggest issue was I have an iPhone 6s Plus and couldnt tether internationally with my iphone.. sooo I need help figure this out

I would like to:
1.) Use iMessages with my main #
2.) Use my iPhone 6s Plus (I like it as a general work horse, reading, email, apps etc)
3.) Receive calls on my "main number".. wifi calling, while abroad.
4.) have the ability to hotspot internationally

These are my requirements and its tricky cause I need an iPhone for imessages but abroad an iPhone cant do hotspot.

One of my ideas is.. port my main number to google voice and set that up on my iphone, have another number (random one) with a google fi sim card in my iphone 6s plus, put a data only card in a hotspot and bring that with me abroad.

Can a hotspot with a data only sim do tethering while abroad? Should I just buy a cheap android phone instead? If I use Google Voice with my main number can I use an app to receive calls via that number on wifi while I'm traveling? What about imessages..

LOL sorry for such a crazy post but I think you all will get it. Thoughts welcomed, please help :-)

Here is an example of the kind of games that would be there: Colt Express!

  • Dress casually & smartly! The weather here is already hot as it hits 33°C during its peak. Keep that in mind and wear something loose, airy and breathable material like cotton.

FAQ

I have never been to a meetup! What do you guys talk about?
